These Hybrid SUVs Have the Best MPG

What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • Numerous hybrid and plug-in hybrid SUVs offer well over 30 mpg.
  • Many PHEV SUVs have more than 30 miles of electric range.
  • Most efficient hybrid and PHEV SUVs are based on affordable models, keeping prices low.

Modern hybrid powertrains do away with one of the age-old compromises, allowing car and SUV shoppers to get both performance and efficiency in the same vehicle. In many cases, hybrid vehicles are more powerful than their gas-only siblings while still returning more than 30 mpg combined — and in the case of plug-in hybrids, more than 30 miles of electric range.

There is, however, one compromise the hybrid and PHEV SUVs can’t avoid. Their more complicated powertrains invariably make them more expensive than their internal-combustion-only counterparts. Still, as the most efficient vehicles tend to be the smallest and the smallest tend to be the cheapest, many of the SUVs highlighted below can readily be found for less than the roughly $50,000 an average new car costs today.

Which Hybrid SUV Has the Best MPG for 2026?

  • Takeaway: Smaller crossovers make for the most efficient vehicles be they from mainstream or luxury brands.

1. Kia Niro

Originally debuting as a hybrid for 2017, the Niro lineup expanded with a PHEV version in 2018 and a full-on electric variant for 2019. All three were redesigned and won our Best Car of 2023 award, but just three years on, the plug-in has been canceled for 2026. Still, the nameplate remains atop our list of SUVs with the best fuel economy by virtue of the hybrid’s EPA-rated 53 mpg combined. The hybrid Niro is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with electrical assist for combined output of 139 horsepower and 195 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels.

2. Lexus UX 300h

The smallest and most affordable Lexus, the UX 300h is also the most efficient hybrid SUV on sale today. It’s closely related to the Toyota Corolla Cross and powered by the same hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The Lexus betters the Toyota in fuel economy for one simple reason: Front-wheel drive is standard on the UX, while the Corolla Cross is exclusively all-wheel drive. Justifying its premium branding — and pricing that starts almost $8,000 higher than its Toyota counterpart’s — the Lexus includes more standard safety equipment as well as niceties such as LED exterior lighting, synthetic leather upholstery and dual-zone automatic climate control.

3. Toyota RAV4

Redesigned for 2026, the RAV4 follows in the Camry’s footsteps in making a hybrid powertrain standard. Based around a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the RAV4’s powertrain is both more powerful and more efficient than the outgoing generation’s optional setup. The fact that the larger and heavier RAV4 is more efficient than the smaller Corolla Cross Hybrid speaks to the benefits of understressing a more powerful engine versus working a smaller powertrain harder. Toyota’s expertise with gas-electric motivation bears multiple fruits in the RAV4; watch for it again farther down this page.

Which Plug-in Hybrid SUVs Have the Best MPG for 2026?

  • Takeaway: PHEVs have more expensive powertrains, but they can also deliver increased power as well as good fuel economy, and they get the bonus of electric-only driving range.

1. Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

Much like relatively pedestrian electric vehicles can pack serious performance, the PHEV variant of the Toyota RAV4 has long been something of a sleeper. But the automaker is embracing that performance in the new generation that launches for 2026, now offering a GR trim. All plug-in RAV4s produce a combined 324 hp, but the GR Sport (short for Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s motorsports division) rides on a lowered, stiffened suspension and 20-inch performance tires; the performance equipment drops its electric range from 52 to 48 miles, however. For maximum gas-free miles, you’ll need to opt for the SE or XSE.

2. Ford Escape PHEV

Ford’s compact SUV is available in eco-friendly, -friendlier and -friendliest forms: efficient internal combustion, hybrid and PHEV powertrains. While the plug-in Escape’s combined EPA rating only bests the regular hybrid by 1 mpg, it comes with a bonus of 37 miles of electric range. The PHEV is slightly more powerful than the plugless hybrid, but its greater mass precludes any performance benefit. If you want AWD, you have to forgo the plug, as the Escape PHEV is only available with FWD. The PHEV’s sole trim level includes a generous list of standard equipment, and all the trappings of any other Escape are available in packages or as stand-alone options.

3. Lexus NX 450+

With an all-new RAV4 bowing for 2026, a next-generation NX from Toyota’s luxury brand seems likely to arrive soon. The NX is the Lexus version of the RAV4, and the 450+ uses a plug-in powertrain similar to that of the last-generation RAV4 but with torquier electric motors. Like the Toyota, the Lexus includes standard AWD. You’ll pay a hefty premium for the Lexus, but it includes standard equipment like synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats and a 10-speaker sound system. Luxuries such as a moonroof, ventilated front seats and automated parking are available.
