What Cars Shoppers Need to Know

  • Hyundai, Kia, Subaru and Volkswagen had some of the biggest reveals of the 2026 New York auto show with all new models and a concept.
  • The World Car of the Year organization announced its top car for 2026.

The 2026 New York International Auto Show’s press preview days were surprising this year, with automakers such as Kia and Subaru showing up with major reveals. New York showed just how committed automakers are to SUVs; nearly every reveal shown was either a gas- or electric-powered SUV — including a concept SUV that was actually a preview of a pickup truck.

The New York show was also the host of the World Car of the Year awards for 2026. A group of 98 automotive experts — including our own Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Newman and Managing Editor Joe Bruzek — crowned the all-new BMW iX3 electric vehicle as the World Car of the Year. Its bold styling and claimed 400-plus miles of driving range helped it take the top crown. Winners in other categories included the Lucid Gravity (Luxury Car) and Hyundai Ioniq 6 N (Performance Car).

Chrysler updated its Pacifica minivan for 2027 with new front styling, technology and family-friendly features. While the redesign was first previewed recently, Chrysler fully revealed the minivan in New York with more details. In redesigning the Pacifica, the Voyager nameplate has been dropped; in its place is a base LX trim that keeps the styling of the old Voyager but has more standard features for the money.

Hyundai’s Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco Competitor

Hyundai came out swinging at the show with a body-on-frame SUV concept called the Boulder. Looking like a prime competitor to the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, Hyundai says this is purely a design study at the moment, but its body-on-frame construction, proportions and target audience are all reflective of the upcoming mid-size pickup that will officially come by 2030.

Infiniti Brings Swoopy Style Back Into Its Lineup

Infiniti is planning a product onslaught in the next few years. The redesigned QX80 started it, and the new QX65 continues it. Based on the QX60, Infiniti took a page from the “SUV coupe” playbook followed by the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz for this model. With styling inspired by the erstwhile FX, pricing for the QX65 will start at just under $56,000 when it goes on sale in the summer.

Kia’s Mini Telluride and New Affordable EV

Kia showed one refreshed model and one all-new one in the redesigned Seltos and brand-new EV3. With the Seltos, Kia copied and pasted the design of the larger Telluride SUV to great effect, as the Seltos is one of the best-looking small crossovers on the market now. Kia says the new Seltos will be available with a gas or hybrid engine when it goes on sale in the second quarter of 2026.

With the automotive industry largely pulling back from EVs, Kia’s reveal of the EV3 may have surprised some, especially considering the brand indefinitely delayed the EV4 sedan in late 2025. The EV3 is a small SUV that will compete with other small electric SUV offerings such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Nissan Leaf. Kia says the EV3 will be available with two battery sizes and either front- or all-wheel drive with 220 or 320 miles of range when it goes on sale later in the year.

Nissan Answers Enthusiasts’ Call With Updated Z

Given the sea of SUVs automakers offer now, sometimes it seems as if the fun stuff gets lost among those more basic modes of transportation. Luckily, Nissan is keeping the enthusiast spirit alive with the Z. The long-running sports car has been updated for 2027 with new features, styling and performance upgrades. The big news, however, is the availability of a six-speed manual transmission on the high-performance Z NISMO (previously, the NISMO was only available with an automatic). Other upgrades to the Z lineup include front brakes lifted from the GT-R, new exterior and interior colors, and a redesigned front grille.

Subaru’s Electric Three-Row and Off-Road Efficiency

Subaru introduced two new models at New York: the Getaway three-row EV and Forester Wilderness Hybrid. Closely related to the recently introduced Toyota Highlander EV, the Getaway is a three-row 420-horsepower EV with room for seven. With over 300 miles of range, Subaru says the Getaway will go on sale late in the year.

The Forester Wilderness Hybrid is a new addition to Subaru’s outdoorsy, off-road Wilderness line. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a Forester Hybrid with Wilderness off-road goodies that include all-terrain tires, underbody production and a raised ride height. Subaru says the Forester Wilderness Hybrid is 25% more fuel-efficient than the gas-powered Forester Wilderness and will go on sale later in 2026.

An All-New Generation for VW’s Three-Row SUV

The three-row SUV class is a big one with many major players, including the Toyota Grand Highlander, Kia Telluride and Chevrolet Traverse. So when Volkswagen previewed that it was working on an all-new Atlas, we knew it would have to hit the ground running. And after its reveal in New York, it looks as if Volkswagen has done exactly that: Completely redesigned both inside and out, the 2027 Atlas has styling inspired by the smaller, high-quality Tiguan. While VW says a hybrid option is coming, its gas-powered turbocharged four-cylinder engine is a carryover. The Atlas is expected to go on sale in the fall.
