What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • All-hybrid powertrain lineup is more powerful and efficient than predecessor
  • RAV4 is most efficient compact SUV

Toyota launched a redesigned, hybrid-only RAV4 for 2026. Following in the Camry sedan’s footsteps, the compact SUV’s powertrain lineup is now exclusively hybrid and also available as a plug-in hybrid that’s rated for 52 miles of electric-only range (with a fully charged battery) before it operates as a regular hybrid.

Our first encounter with the new 2026 RAV4 suggests it’s a comprehensive improvement on its already compelling predecessor. Not only is the 2026 RAV4 more powerful and more efficient than the outgoing model, it’s the most efficient compact SUV on the market, period. Versus the Competition

The Toyota RAV4 is the bestselling vehicle in the country that is not a full-size pickup, landing at No. 3 on the 2025 sales charts. The five most popular compact SUVs all take different approaches to hybridization. The Toyota is exclusively hybrid while the Honda CR-V offers hybrid and gas-only powertrains. Hyundai offers a similar choice as the CR-V, but the Tucson Hybrid is exclusively AWD while the Honda hybrid can be had with FWD or AWD. The Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Rogue do not offer hybrid options.

The EPA fuel-economy ratings below are for 2026 models and represent the highest figures attained by each powertrain configuration. Some trim levels may return lower fuel economy. Vehicles are listed in the standard city/highway/combined mpg format in order of descending combined rating.
