What Truck Shoppers Need to Know

  • The Toyota Tundra lags Ford and Chevrolet full-size pickup truck rivals in maximum towing capacity but pulls typical trailers with ease.
  • Tundra tops out at 12,000 pounds in SR5 trim
  • Available hybrid powertrain does not meaningfully increase towing capacity

If you need a full-size pickup, you either have a lot of big, dirty stuff to throw in the bed or a heavy trailer to pull. The 2026 Toyota Tundra addresses the first concern with three available bed lengths (8.1, 6.5 and 5.5 feet) and tackles the second with a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds.

Our Experience Towing With the Toyota Tundra

In prior tests, we’ve found the Tundra to be adept at tugging the sort of mid-size camper that truck shoppers are likely to tow. Between the torquey twin-turbocharged V-6 and 10-speed automatic transmission, the engine has no trouble staying in the meat of the power band. The truck easily pulls up freeway grades and manages to stay stable in moderate crosswinds.

The brakes handle descents with no issue. An integrated trailer brake controller is standard on all trims except the entry-level SR — but if you’re regularly towing heavy loads, you’ll want to stay away from the SR for other reasons, as well. The Tundra’s towing capacity varies greatly depending on trim level and cab/bed configuration.

What’s the 2026 Tundra’s Maximum Towing Capacity?

The 2026 Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds. That figure is achieved by the rear-wheel-drive SR5 Double Cab (extended cab) with the 6.5-foot bed. The Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 can tow more — 13,500 and 13,300 pounds, respectively — while the Ram 1500 tops out at 11,610 pounds. If you’re routinely bumping up against those ceilings, though, it’s best to upgrade to a heavy-duty pickup that can more easily handle larger trailers.

Max Towing Capacity by Engine

  • i-Force (SR): 8,300 pounds
  • i-Force (other trims): 12,000 pounds
  • i-Force Max: 11,450 pounds

The lowest towing capacity of any Tundra is the base SR trim’s 8,300-pound limit. Every 2026 Tundra has a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine Toyota brands i-Force, backed by a 10-speed automatic. But the SR’s V-6 makes just 348 horsepower and 405 pounds-feet of torque; in all other trim levels, the i-Force V-6 generates 389 hp and 479 pounds-feet.

The i-Force Max is the hybrid version that adds an electric motor and battery that contribute an additional 48 hp and 184 pounds-feet, for totals of 437 hp and 583 pounds-feet. However, the hybrid components add hundreds of pounds of additional weight, so the Max can’t tow meaningfully more than the regular i-Force engine. The hybrid engine is optional on the Limited, Platinum and 1794 trim levels; and standard on the TRD Pro and Capstone.

The Tundra lineup ranges from basic work trucks to luxury workhorses and the off-road specialist TRD Pro. With different levels of equipment — and therefore weight — suspension setups featuring adaptive dampers, load-leveling air springs or the TRD Pro’s burly Fox off-road dampers, max towing capacity varies widely between trim levels, too. If you want the features of a certain trim level but need a specific towing capacity, see if you can get both here:
