Hot on the heels of a major recall for its Tundra pickup truck, Toyota has issued another major safety missive, this time for the Prius. The issue concerns electric door switches.

More than 142,000 model-year 2023-26 Priuses are affected. Certain circumstances could cause water to enter the electric door switches on the rear doors of the subject vehicles and cause a switch to activate; if this occurs while the rear doors are unlocked, a rear door can open while driving, increasing the risk of injury.

To resolve the issue, dealers will modify the left and right rear-door switch circuits to prevent the switch from activating even if it’s shorted. All repairs will be done for free. Toyota will notify owners by late March, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-331-4331, visit Toyota.com/recall, call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
