Rivian

Rivian is a U.S. electric-vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Irvine, Calif. The company’s primary assembly plant is located in Normal, Ill., at what was once a sprawling Mitsubishi automobile plant. Rivian’s first vehicles, the R1T pickup and an SUV variant called the R1S, made their debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. After a series of delays, however, the first production models did not arrive until the 2022 model year.

Focused on off-road driving and all-terrain capability, the boxy R1T and R1S both come standard with all-wheel drive, dual- or quad-electric motor powertrains, and a choice of three battery-pack sizes. Rivian also makes a commercial delivery van for Amazon and other fleet customers. The company is launching a smaller, more affordable R2 SUV for the 2026 model year, slated to be followed by a smaller-still R3 SUV.
