Why Is the 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland $5,000 More Than Its Subaru Trailseeker Twin?

Toyota owns a pretty sizable stake in Subaru, and the two have partnered to produce vehicles like the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ. Most recently, the automakers teamed up to develop the 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland and 2026 Subaru Trailseeker EVs. Aside from a few styling and equipment differences, the EVs are virtually identical, but the bZ Woodland is $5,305 more expensive. What’s going on here?

What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • Toyota and Subaru sell nearly the same electric vehicle in the bZ Woodland and Trailseeker, respectively.
  • Despite the two being virtually identical, Toyota charges over $5,000 more for the bZ Woodland.

The Big Difference

The bZ Woodland is more expensive because it packs more standard features than the Trailseeker. Toyota only offers the bZ Woodland in two trims: base and Premium. Meanwhile, Subaru spreads out the equipment in the Trailseeker over three trims: Premium, Limited and Touring.

Take the base trims of both, for example. In the bZ Woodland, you get synthetic leather-trimmed seating, while Subaru goes for a water-repellent fabric for the base Trailseeker; the base bZ Woodland has standard front and rear heated seats and a heated steering wheel, while the base Trailseeker Premium only has heated front seats and no heated steering wheel. Many of the features that are standard on both trims of the bZ Woodland aren’t available on the Trailseeker until you get to the top-of-the-line Touring trim. There’s also value in other areas, such as the Toyota coming standard with two years or 25,000 miles (whichever comes first) of ToyotaCare scheduled maintenance, though that doesn’t amount to very much on an EV that doesn’t need oil changes.

What the base bZ Woodland gets you over the base Trailseeker:

  • Synthetic leather-trimmed seating (versus fabric)
  • Front and rear heated seats (versus heated front only)
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Two years or 25,000 miles of scheduled maintenance
  • 1,500-watt AC household power outlet
  • 360-degree camera system

Near Identical Specs

Both get 74.7-kilowatt-hour battery packs paired with dual-motor all-wheel-drive setups that are good for 375 horsepower. Both get a maximum 281 miles of range.

Dimensionally, they’re nearly identical. Both EVs ride on the same 112.2-inch wheelbase. The bZ Woodland has 8.4 inches of ground clearance; the Trailseeker gets 0.1 inch more. The Toyota has up to 74.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row versus the Subaru’s 74 cubic feet. Despite Subaru — for brand reasons — labeling the AWD system in the Trailseeker “Symmetrical,” it’s the same system used in the bZ Woodland. They even have the same X-Mode off-roading system, which includes Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes to help the EVs navigate rough terrain. The system also has a feature called Grip Control, which can modulate power to each wheel for extra traction.

Which One Should You Choose?

So if you’re cross-shopping these two nearly identical EVs, which is the right choice? That’ll come down to personal preference and budget. If value is your main motivator, the Subaru is likely the better choice. Right out the gate, it has the advantage of a lower starting price of $41,445 (all prices include destination), but keep in mind that you may have to shell out more for some of the features that are standard on the Toyota, which starts at $46,750.
