What’s the Honda CR-V’s MPG?
What Car Shoppers Need to Know
- Hybrid CR-V posts best EPA rating of 43/36/40 mpg city/highway/combined
- Gas-only CR-V rated at best of 28/33/30 mpg
- Only Toyota RAV4 is more efficient
When Honda redesigned the CR-V for 2023, it repositioned the model’s available hybrid powertrain as a premium offering. Bundling the hybrid’s gas-electric setup with more standard features just makes sense, as the CR-V hybrid is both quicker and vastly more efficient than its gas-only counterpart. The CR-V is also more efficient than nearly all of its competitors — and even the gas version posts better fuel-economy numbers than some key rivals.

By the Numbers
The 2026 Honda CR-V’s standard powertrain is a 190-horsepower, turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It makes 179 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. With front-wheel drive, the CR-V is rated at 28/33/30 mpg city/highway/combined. The all-wheel-drive CR-V returns 27/31/29 mpg.
The 2026 Honda CR-V hybrid uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors to generate a combined 204 hp and 247 pounds-feet. There is not a traditional transmission in the CR-V hybrid, but its electric motors function as a CVT. It’s rated at 43/36/40 mpg with FWD and 40/34/37 mpg with AWD. In addition to its superior fuel economy, the hybrid accelerates from 0-60 mph about a second quicker than the gas CR-V.

Versus the Competition
Of the five bestselling compact SUVs, only the CR-V and the Hyundai Tucson offer both hybrid and non-hybrid options. Honda customers can get a CR-V hybrid with either front- or all-wheel drive, while the Tucson Hybrid is exclusively AWD. The Toyota RAV4 is only available as a hybrid — with FWD or AWD — while the Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Rogue do not offer hybrid options for 2026.
All fuel-economy figures below are ratings for 2026 models. They are listed in city/highway/combined mpg format in order of descending combined rating. These are the highest figures attained by each powertrain configuration; some trim levels may return lower fuel economy.

Real-World Experience
Cars.com recently conducted a real-world fuel-economy test of the Honda CR-V and its competitive set, driving AWD examples on a 250-mile loop. All but the RAV4 were 2025 models, and none but the RAV4 have been mechanically updated for 2026. The RAV4 was completely redesigned for the new model year, with improved fuel-economy ratings from the 2025 model we tested. The example in the comparison, however, was nearly spot on with its 39-mpg rating for that year.
A few of the compact SUVs we tested were higher-spec trim levels with lower EPA ratings than the figures noted above, but our findings largely tracked with the EPA’s numbers. Our observed fuel economy was as follows:
As-Tested MPG
- Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE: 37.9 mpg
- Honda CR-V hybrid Sport Touring: 36.5 mpg
- Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited: 33.6 mpg
- Nissan Rogue Platinum: 30.8 mpg
- Chevrolet Equinox Activ: 27.6 mpg
