What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • The 2026 Toyota Prius hybrid returns up to 57 mpg in EPA-combined cycle.
  • Regular hybrid is available with all-wheel drive
  • Prius Plug-in Hybrid boasts up to 44 miles of electric range

If it is good fuel economy you desire, then a Prius you seek. Some 17th century philosopher might have said that. Or maybe Gandalf. Perhaps neither did. But over the last 25 years, Toyota has refined its formula to make the Prius the single most efficient vehicle on our roads (with four wheels, anyway) while diversifying the lineup with available AWD and a plug-in hybrid variant. Which one best suits your needs will vary, but all offer outstanding fuel economy.

Prius by the Numbers

Both the standard Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid use the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. In the regular hybrid, combined output between the engine and electric motor is 194 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, but AWD is available on the plug-free Prius. It’s achieved with another electric motor powering the rear axle — a lighter and more efficient means than traditional mechanical AWD hardware. The additional motor bumps the AWD Prius’ output ever so slightly to 196 hp.

The PHEV gets a stronger electric motor for 220 hp total. That makes it somewhat quicker than the regular hybrid, but even the base car is notably quicker than many competitors — not that acceleration is a high priority for buyers seeking maximum efficiency, but it’s nice not to worry when merging onto the freeway. A 13.6-kilowatt-hour battery pack grants the PHEV as much as 44 miles of electric range, according to the manufacturer, more than virtually any other plug-in aside from Toyota’s own RAV4 and a few other vehicles. Toyota does not, however, offer the plug-in Prius with AWD.

Versus the Competition

It’s a testament to the Prius’ stellar efficiency that even with AWD, its EPA combined fuel economy ties that of the second-most efficient hybrid, the FWD-only Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue. And even with the extra power of its larger electric motor and additional weight of its battery pack, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid ranks among the most efficient hybrids available today.
