What’s the 2026 Toyota Corolla’s MPG?
What Car Shoppers Need to Know
- The Toyota Corolla is one of the most fuel-efficient cars on sale today.
- The gas-only Corolla is rated at up to 35 mpg combined, and the hybrid tops out at 50 mpg.
- The Corolla is also one of the most affordable cars available.
It’s not hard to understand why the Toyota Corolla is one of the bestselling cars in the country. The compact Toyota checks all the basic-transportation boxes: It’s reliable, affordable and efficient, exceptionally so in the latter two cases. For buyers on a budget, the Corolla is a twofer, among the cheapest new cars available today and one of the most efficient.

By the Numbers
If inclement weather is a concern, the Corolla Hybrid is even available with all-wheel drive. Toyota powers the hybrid’s rear wheels with an electric motor instead of a traditional mechanical drivetrain, which reduces the fuel-economy penalty of driving all four wheels.
If you want a Corolla Hybrid, though, you’d better be alright with a sedan. The hybrid powertrain is not available in the Corolla Hatchback. However, every Corolla configuration returns outstanding fuel economy: up to an EPA-rated 35 mpg combined for the gas-only sedan and hatchback and up to 50 mpg combined for the hybrid.
While value is a central part of the Corolla’s appeal, it is almost certainly worth upgrading to the hybrid if you have the budget. Other than their powertrains, the gas and hybrid Corolla sedans are virtually identical, and the hybrids are priced only $1,850 higher than their gas-only counterparts. (For the range-topping trims, the difference is just $500.)
Based on EPA combined ratings, the hybrid buyer will save more than $350 on gas annually, meaning they will make up the upfront price premium in around five years; XLE buyers will be ahead in just over one year. The Corolla Hybrid also gets a more sophisticated rear suspension than the gas-only car, so buyers enjoy improved ride and handling.

Versus the Competition
Both Corolla powertrains are among the most efficient in their respective categories, and both offer peak efficiency per dollar. No more affordable gas-powered car gets better fuel economy than the Toyota, and no hybrid competitor is both cheaper and more efficient, though the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue is more efficient.
