What's the 2026 Ford Maverick's MPG?
What Car Shoppers Need to Know
- With either available engine, the compact Ford Maverick is the most efficient pickup truck available.
- Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at up to 26 mpg combined
- Hybrid 2.5-liter four-cylinder returns up to 38 mpg combined
If you’re looking to explain the Ford Maverick’s overwhelming success — more than twice as many sales as the Ranger in 2025, trailing only the Toyota Tacoma on the non-full-size truck charts — its fuel economy must have something to do with it. With its standard turbocharged four-cylinder, the Maverick is the most fuel-efficient pickup available today, and the optional hybrid powertrain betters the turbo by nearly half.

By the Numbers
The EcoBoost turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine comes on every Maverick trim level. It generates 250 horsepower and 280 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission — except in the Lobo, where the engine is teamed with a seven-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on the XL and XLT, while all-wheel drive is standard on the Lariat, Lobo and Tremor.
The hybrid powertrain is available on the XL, XLT and Lariat (it’s not available on the Lobo or Tremor). It makes 191 hp and 155 pounds-feet of torque, and it uses a continuously variable automatic transmission. While the turbo engine has been available with AWD since the Maverick went on sale for 2022, Ford only started offering AWD with the hybrid powertrain for the 2025 model year. Ford charges $1,000 to upgrade from a turbo FWD truck to either the hybrid or AWD, but if you want a hybrid and AWD, that’ll be $3,220, please.

Versus the Competition
It should come as no surprise that the Maverick is more efficient than the larger pickups that populate the mid-size class — the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, Honda Ridgeline and the like. What is surprising is that even the powerful turbo Maverick returns better fuel economy than its only direct competitor, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, when the Santa Cruz is equipped with its most efficient engine, a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder.
Another fun fact: With the available turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six, the full-size Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500s are rated at 23/28/25 mpg, better than every mid-size pickup. Figures below are for the most efficient configuration with each engine — in other words, front- or rear-wheel drive except in cases where AWD is standard.
