What Car Shoppers Need to Know:

  • Chevrolet has revealed the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport.
  • Grand Sport will be powered by a new V-8 engine
  • Wears the wide bodywork of the Z06, ZR1 and hybrid Corvette E-Ray

The faster Chevy Corvettes have been coming fast in recent years. It started with the Z06, followed by the twin-turbocharged ZR1 and the 1,250-horsepower ZR1X hot on its heels. Next up is a hotter mid-engine Chevy for buyers without deep six-figure budgets or 10-second quarter-mile needs. Chevrolet revealed the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport over the weekend, the mid-engine monster unsubtly leading a parade lap of its predecessors at the IMSA 12 Hours of Sebring car race in Florida.

What We Know About the C8 Grand Sport

Confirmed details on the C8 Corvette Grand Sport are few. There are just two, in fact, but they’re consequential: It will be powered by what Chevrolet says is “the next-generation of GM V-8 technology,” which sources report means a whole new engine. Said to displace 6.7 liters — 0.5 liter larger than the LT2 in the standard Corvette and more than 1 liter bigger than the high-revving V-8s in the Z06 and ZR1s — the new V-8 is rumored to produce as much as 535 hp.

Clearly visible at Sebring was the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport’s wide bodywork. Shared with, well, every Corvette except the entry-level Stingray, the wider body means the Grand Sport will have room for fatter tires. If the signature Admiral Blue paint and wide white center stripe weren’t enough to identify the C8 that lapped Sebring as a Grand Sport, it also sported the trademark red hash marks on the fenders. However, since the current Corvette is the first mid-engined model in the car’s history, here those marks are on the rear fenders.

We’ll know more about the 2027 Chevrolet Grand Sport later in the week. Chevy is releasing full information Thursday, and Cars.com will have an editor on the ground at the event.

What Is the Corvette Grand Sport?

The Corvette Grand Sport first appeared in 1963 as a racecar. Chevrolet intended to build 125 examples but canceled the project after just five cars were built. The name then lay dormant until a one-year resurrection on the C4 Corvette in 1996.

Since the C6 Grand Sport debuted in 2010, the Grand Sport has been a sort of Z06 Lite. That was also true of the C7-generation Grand Sport, which blended the Z06’s bodywork and chassis modifications (suspension, brakes, wheels and tires) with the standard Corvette powertrain. Other than the new engine, which should provide a healthy bump from the Stingray’s 490 hp while leaving a respectable gap between the Grand Sport and Z06, we expect much of the same from the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport. Stay tuned for full details.
