After more than a year free of major recalls, Subaru is recalling more than 69,100 examples of its Crosstrek Hybrid and Forester Hybrid SUVs over an issue with the fuel cap that may lead to a fire.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2026 Crosstrek Hybrids and model-year 2025 Forester Hybrids. When the gas tank is near full, an increase in temperature may cause the fuel to expand and spill out of the filler neck as a result of an insufficient seal on the fuel cap. Leaking fuel near an ignition source and high temperatures increases the risk of a fire.

To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the fuel filler cap gasket for free. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and to avoid filling their gas tank past 50% until the remedy is completed. Owners will be notified by mail March 25, but those with further questions can call Subaru at 844-373-6614 (Subaru’s number for this recall is WRD-26), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
