CARS.COM — Subaru is indicating its return to the three-row SUV market with the Ascent concept. The seven-passenger, all-wheel-drive ute debuted today at the 2017 New York International Auto Show ahead of what the automaker promises will be a U.S. launch by 2018, roughly four years after Subaru’s last full-size SUV, the Tribeca, ended its production run.

A sooner-than-later arrival as a production model is supported by the Ascent’s assembly-line-ready looks. Its brawny front end and shapely exterior styling, a few small flourishes aside, appear poised for the dealership. The Ascent’s visage is defined by its expansive “bluff” grille, large inlets under the headlights and aggressive lower body elements.
Things look a little more concept-y on the inside, where a flowing dashboard seems to be reaching out to bear hug front-seat occupants, and a glowing center display and digital gauge cluster appear just a little more sci-fi-like than we expect to be able to buy — but with welcome control knobs. Two-tone brown-and-cream perforated leather covers the seats while contrast stitching and metal trim throughout, along with sportlike pedals, round out notable cabin appointments. Second-row passengers will sit in captain’s chairs, while those in the third row will share a bench.
