BMW thoroughly overhauled its X1 for the 2023 model year, improving the powertrain, chassis and interior. The automaker also updated the compact SUV’s front crash-prevention system, helping it earn the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ honors.

A Top Safety Pick+ award requires a vehicle to get a good rating in four different crash tests: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, updated side and original moderate overlap front. It also must include acceptable- or good-rated headlights as standard equipment across all trim levels, and pass both day- and nighttime pedestrian detection tests.

While the previous X1 met the requirements for occupant protection, its pedestrian detection system — well, in IIHS’ diplomatic phrasing — “received no credit”; it shows in videos of the SUV plowing over dummies in different scenarios without so much as tapping the brakes. The 2023 X1’s standard front crash-prevention system, on the other hand, aced the tests with superior ratings. The X1 also received a good rating for its standard LED projector headlights.
