New Volvo EX60 Looks Ready to Take on BMW iX3, Mercedes GLC and Rivian R2 EVs

What a looker, eh? We’ve lost the compact Volvo EX30 but gained this new mid-size 2027 Volvo EX60, the Swedish automaker’s all-electric entry to one of the most hotly contested market battlegrounds. In just one short model year, we’ll see the arrival of the highly anticipated BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz GLC With EQ Technology and Rivian R2, among others. Tough crowd, but some studio time with a U.S-spec EX60 revealed the new mid-sizer offers all the right tech, numbers and curb appeal to please newcomers and brand loyalists alike.

The EX60 is certainly the one to pick if you prioritize at least some sense of conventionality. Whereas the iX3 is funk-forward and the Rivian remains as trucky as the bigger R1S, the EX60 is a stylistic analog for the popular gas-powered XC60, though incorporating more than a pinch of the mechanically and structurally related Polestar 3 toward the rear third of its profile. A bit more wagonesque than the upright XC60, but it’s neither too much in either direction to tip the balance.

Volvo EX60 Range, Power

The EX60’s specs are quite impressive and more than commensurate with segment expectations. Riding on the new, updated 800-volt SPA3 platform, a single rear-mounted motor is standard on the base P6 grade with 369 hp and between a manufacturer-estimated 295 and 307 miles of range from a 80-kilowatt-hour battery, depending on specification. Dual motors and all-wheel drive accompany the mid-level P10 trim, rated at 503 hp and 524 pounds-feet of torque from a 95-kWh battery pack that’ll see you covering between 312 and 322 miles of range.

Me? I’ll spring for the top-dawg, big-daddy dual-motor P12 with its 670 hp(!), 583 pounds-feet of torque, and range between 375 and 400 miles from its 117-kWh pack. DC fast-charge rates are excellent regardless of trim, with a peak of 320 kilowatts on the P6 and a matching 370 kW on both P10 and P12, the latter adding up to 173 miles of range in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions, according to Volvo. All EX60s are standard with a North American Charging Standard charge port, so familiarize yourself with your local Tesla Supercharger stations.

Is the 2027 Volvo EX60 a Luxury SUV?

Sounds like it’ll be an absolute sizzler to drive, especially given the new 800-volt architecture. I quite like the larger EX90 and very much liked the now-discontinued EX30 Cross Country, so I expect this tweener size to match its Goldilocks spec sheet. It certainly looks the Volvo part inside and out; the EX60 carries the same Euro-chic cutlines and rounded edges that have come to define modern Volvo, and it very much exudes an aura of luxury and upmarket appeal to match the established luxury marques.

Inside, you’ll find five extremely comfortable seats, at least when stationary. I’m not really one to notice (or care) about seat comfort beyond some that are noticeably punishing, but the EX60’s thrones were immediately some of the most cushy, well-sculpted chairs I’ve crushed in a hot minute. This goes for the oft-neglected rear seats, too — both of which offer optional heating while crucially retaining Volvo’s popular pop-up booster seat cushion.

Does the 2027 Volvo EX60 Have Physical Buttons?

This is still roundly a software-defined vehicle, so physical controls are limited to a few steering-wheel toggles and a volume roller flanked by track skip and rewind buttons on the center stack. And what a roller it is: In typical Volvo fashion, it’s hewn from faceted smoked glass — or at least high-quality plastic — that is subtly backlit for both style and utility. The rest of the cabin is similarly stylish and cleverly packaged, with a damped, retractable cupholder tray, flip-out storage bin in the center console and cloth-lined stowage tunnel separating the front passengers.

Most of the vehicle functions and all of the infotainment are handled via a center-mounted 15-inch curved organic light-emitting diode display with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Google Built-In, at least on the P10 trim. An 11.4-inch driver display supports the latter, as does available wireless device charging and cabin-wide USB-C charge ports. Beyond the tech, it’s a requisitely luxurious cabin that’s on par with what you’ll find in current and prior Volvos, including a material mix of leather, wood and textile trim. For now, we’re only privy to the P10’s list of standard equipment, dossier including 21-speaker Bose sound system, panoramic roof, active suspension and three-zone climate control.

Does the 2027 Volvo EX60 Have a Frunk?

Ladies and gentleman — we got a frunk! Three cubic feet is usable but relatively modest, but functional frunks are borderline uncommon these days, so I’m just happy there’s one present. Aside from the clever cubbies in the main cabin, cargo capacity and storage are impressive. There’s 20.4 cubic feet of space behind the second row, swelling to 58.2 cubic feet with the second row folded flat. Don’t miss the two plastic storage pockets on either side of the impressively deep rear underfloor storage area, accessible via a 60/40-split, folding false floor.

EX60 Pricing

Full pricing information is still under wraps, but Volvo’s official claim is a starting price of “around $60K,” putting it right in the path of the aforementioned BMW and Mercedes mid-sizers. Given the XC60’s (very) narrow victory over the XC90 for the bestselling Volvo in 2025, I expect good things from next year’s sales recap, with the 2027 Volvo EX60 going on sale in the coming months. Let’s hope this one sticks around longer than the EX30.
