All-New 2027 Volvo EX60 Aims for Heart of EV Market
Key Points
- All-new electric mid-size SUV
- Up to 400 miles of range
- Goes on sale in the summer of 2026
Polestar might be the fully electric sister brand to Volvo, but that’s not stopping Volvo from aggressively pursuing electrification within its own lineup. It has so far bracketed the ends of the electric SUV market with the three-row EX90 and the small EX30, but its next electric vehicle, the EX60, will compete in what is the largest EV class globally: mid-size SUVs.

All-New Mid-Size Platform
Riding on an all-new architecture Volvo calls SPA3, the 2027 EX60 is roughly as long as a Honda Passport but narrower and lower. It measures 189.1 inches long, 74.8 inches wide and 64.5 inches tall. Riding on a wheelbase of 116.9 inches, the EX60 stretches its front and rear axles more than 3 inches farther apart than the Honda SUV.
That results in front-seat space equivalent to what you’d find in the Passport and other mainstream mid-size SUVs. Surprisingly given its wheelbase, the EX60 has 3.5 inches less rear-seat legroom than the Honda. (Headroom in the backseat is similar.) With a roofline that sits nearly 10 inches lower than the Passport’s, Volvo says the EX60 has less than half the cargo volume, with 20.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a maximum of 64.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat. Under the hood, the frunk can accommodate another 3.0 cubes of stuff.
The new architecture incorporates some major developments for a Volvo EV, including megacastings that replace hundreds of smaller chassis parts with a single large piece. It also employs what Volvo calls “cell-to-body,” which incorporates the battery pack into the EX60’s body structure and therefore keeps the EX60 lighter than it would be with a traditional separate battery pack and floor pan. At 4,663 pounds, the base EV is barely 200 pounds heavier than an entry-level Passport.
Powertrain Specs and Range
Volvo says the EX60’s all-new battery pack leverages a new cell design for a 20% improvement in energy density. Hakan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars CEO, claims the EX60 will “remove all obstacles for going electric.” He is referring to a maximum range of 400 miles, as well as the ability to add as much as 173 miles in just 10 minutes or go from a 10% charge to 80% in as little as 18 minutes on a 400-kilowatt DC fast charger. A North American Charging Standard port is standard, allowing owners to plug in at Tesla Superchargers and compatible public charging stations nationwide.
Three powertrains will be available, each with a different battery pack. The entry-level EX60 P6 drives its rear wheels with a single electric motor generating 369 horsepower and 354 pounds-feet of torque. It has an 80-kilowatt-hour battery that grants it a range of 310 miles. The mid-tier P10 gets a second motor driving the front wheels for a total of 503 hp and 524 pounds-feet, as well as a 91-kWh battery good for 320 miles.
At the top of the lineup is the P12, which also boasts dual motors and all-wheel drive. With a total of 670 hp and 583 pounds-feet, the P12 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.8 seconds. (The P10 takes a claimed 4.4 seconds and the P6 needs 5.7, per Volvo.) The most powerful EX60 also has the longest range; thanks to its 112-kWh pack, it has a range of 400 miles. A proper SUV, the EX60 is rated to tow up to 3,600 pounds in the rear-drive configuration, and the P10 and P12 are able to tug up to 4,500 pounds.
Conversation Is a Two-Way Street
The SPA3 platform also represents a new step in Volvo’s integration of cutting-edge technology and software into its vehicles. The latest version of HuginCore, the brand’s computing system, integrates Google Gemini AI for voice control, and what the automaker says is lag-free touchscreen response. Those who adhere to a more traditional definition of in-car tech will appreciate the EX60’s Bowers & Wilkins audio system, which sports a tremendous 28 speakers including head restraint units in the front and backseats.
A Cross Country, Of Course
Like Volvo’s smallest EV, the EX30, the EX60 will get a Cross Country derivative for buyers who want to wander a little off the beaten path. In addition to the requisite black lower-body cladding and unique wheels, the EX60 Cross Country is fitted with useful off-road gear. It sports stainless-steel skid plates front and rear, as well as an adjustable-height air suspension that sits 0.8 inch higher than the standard EX60 in its normal ride height and can be raised another 0.8 inch. The Cross Country will only be available with the P10 and P12 powertrains.

Release Date and Availability
The 2027 Volvo EX60 will be available to order in the U.S. sales in the summer of 2026. The P6 and P10 will arrive first, and the P12 will follow sometime thereafter. Volvo hasn’t announced a base price yet, but from the positioning of the brand’s other EVs, we expect a starting price somewhere in the low-to-mid $60,000 range.
