In advance of the IAA Mobility show in Munich, which kicks off Tuesday, Mercedes-Benz has released a most unexpected teaser: a dimly lit photo of a G-Class SUV in profile. What’s surprising about this is the SUV’s roof: It does not have one. Mercedes confirms that, like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, this is a four-door convertible SUV. The automaker also says the vehicle will be sold “in almost every market around the world, including the U.S.”

The G-Class’ 46-year history is full of derivatives that were not available in the U.S. In fact, the SUV itself was not officially sold here until more than 20 years after it debuted in 1979, with Mercedes leaving the job to third-party importers. Even then, we never received the full lineup. Two-door hardtops and convertibles have been a staple of the G-Class lineup elsewhere in the world since the beginning.
But other than the ludicrous and extremely limited production Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet (of which only 99 were built and priced around half a million bucks), the forthcoming SUV will be Mercedes’ first four-door G-Class convertible. Expect a more accessible price for this one, and stay tuned for more details.
