CARS.COM — The buildup to the International Motor Show Germany in Frankfurt this month has been slow and cagey, and Mercedes-Benz is more than happy to add to the mystery with a quick photo tease of the Project One.
The automaker’s new mystery machine comes from Mercedes-AMG, the performance branch of the company. Details on the car are very thin, but what we know sure sounds exciting. It will be a two-seat “supersports” show car (read: concept), feature a hybrid drivetrain that makes over 1,000 horsepower and have a top speed of around 217 mph.
The hybrid portion of the drivetrain will utilize “fully fledged” Formula One hybrid technology, which likely means a modified version of the energy recovery system found on current F1 cars. The ERS is connected to the turbocharger of the engine and converts heat from the exhaust gases into energy that’s stored in a battery. The driver can use this energy during the race, but the amount they can use per lap is limited to an additional 160 hp for approximately 33 seconds per lap.
We’ll have more details on the Project One and other debuts at the International Motor Show Germany when they become available closer to the show’s opening on Sept. 14.
