What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • Ineos Grenadiers will be available to rent at airport Hertz rental counters in the spring.
  • Grenadier is an homage to early Land Rover Defenders
  • Hertz will have the SUVs available at 21 airports around the U.S.

Everything about the Ineos Grenadier is fascinating, from an origin story involving a petrochemical billionaire to a snub and a lawsuit from Land Rover to its charming old-school construction and aircraft-like interior packed with metal trim and rocker switches. That fascination can soon be acted upon by interested shoppers in a new way: You’ll be able to take an extended test drive in the luxury off-road SUV by renting one from the airport Hertz counter.

Overnight? Keep It as Long as You Want

Starting in the spring, Hertz will have Ineos Grenadiers available to rent at major airports around the U.S. Neither Ineos nor Hertz has yet specified which airports, but a report from Automotive News says hundreds of Grenadiers will be distributed among 21 hubs.

The Grenadier will join other premium Hertz offerings including the Porsche Boxster, Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS, Cadillac Escalade, electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y and Polestar 2, and even Ford Mustang Shelbys. All Ineos SUVs in the Hertz fleet will be the midrange Fieldmaster trim, which includes heated seats, leather trim, safari windows above the front seats and parking sensors. Including taxes and fees, it will only cost about $130 a day to rent a Grenadier.

What Is the Ineos Grenadier?

Ineos is a U.K.-based petrochemical giant. Its chairman, Jim Ratcliffe, launched the automotive division with the Grenadier SUV for the 2024 model year. The Grenadier is more or less a factory-built replica of the early Land Rover Defender 110 powered by a turbocharged BMW 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine. It backs up its rugged appearance with full-time four-wheel drive with a locking center differential. The automaker’s lineup also includes the Grenadier Quartermaster pickup truck, a reinterpretation of the Defender 130. You can’t rent that one from Hertz — yet.
