What Car Shoppers Need to Know:

  • Tesla Superchargers make up the largest DC fast-charging network in the U.S.
  • Owners will need to use an adapter, available from dealerships and online.
  • 2027 Dodge Charger Daytona first Stellantis electric vehicle with Tesla charging port

Public charging just got a lot easier for owners of Stellantis EVs. The agreement between Stellantis — which owns Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati and Ram — and Tesla that allows the former automaker’s products to use Tesla’s Superchargers is now in effect.

Tesla’s Superchargers make up the largest DC fast-charging network in the country by a long shot. As of this writing, there are nearly 15,000 publicly accessible DC fast-charging stations in the U.S. with a total of more than 70,000 plugs. (Just as gas stations typically have more than one pump, a single charging station typically consists of multiple chargers.) Tesla Superchargers account for only about 3,000 of those stations, but they’re more than half of the total plugs.

Overnight, that means drivers of the Dodge Charger Daytona, Jeep Wagoneer S and new Jeep Recon have more than twice as many DC fast-charging opportunities. Low-volume Stellantis EVs such as the Ram ProMaster EV, Fiat 500e and Maserati’s electric Folgore (GranTurismo, GranCabrio and Grecale) lineup can also use Tesla Superchargers.

Will You Need an Adapter?

For now, most Stellantis EV drivers will need to use an adapter at Tesla charging stations. Tesla uses a different plug and charge port design than most other automakers have employed up until recently. Its so-called North American Charging Standard hardware is much smaller and lighter than the Combined Charging System components used by other brands. An adapter — basically a jumbo-size version of the connector you use to plug a USB accessory into a USB-C port — is currently available for $230 at Stellantis dealers and Mopar.com.

After Tesla opened its charging network to EVs from other brands, every automaker in the country signed agreements to give their customers access. Many have started to incorporate NACS ports into their vehicles from the factory, negating the need for an adapter. Among Stellantis EVs, the 2027 Dodge Charger Daytona will be the first with a native NACS charging port.

How Do You Pay?

Stellantis EV drivers will need to download the Free2move app to plug in at Tesla Superchargers. The app allows drivers to find Superchargers and includes real-time availability data so you don’t limp in with mere miles of range left to find every plug occupied. Free2move also allows users to set up a payment account; this is necessary as many Superchargers do not have card readers and require payment through an app.
