CARS.COM — On Friday, BMW teased on Twitter something ahead of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. But what will it be? Speculation bounced between the roadster version of the i8, a special roadster version of the upcoming 8 Series, or the joint Toyota-BMW roadster in line to replace the discontinued Z4.
Conjecture has coalesced around the official reveal of the upcoming not-Z5 roadster. The i8 roadster has been seen multiple times already and the lines don’t quite add up to an 8 Series roadster, either. The upcoming Z-something roadster will allegedly exist in some form as a new Toyota Supra, as well — for those perhaps looking to build a 10-second car.
Very little is known about the roadster. Will it be a hybrid sports car? Will it have all-wheel drive or be a “pure” rear-wheel-drive sports car? Will it be offered with a manual transmission?
To paraphrase BMW’s official statements regarding these questions: We’ll know for sure on Aug. 17, so stay tuned for more details.
