$50,000 Lucids Are Coming: New Details on Its Mid-Size Electric SUVs
What Car Shoppers Need to Know
- Lucid’s new mid-size SUVs are designed to lower the brand’s price of entry below $50,000.
- Lucid announced the Cosmos and Earth SUVs. An unnamed third model is also in the works.
- Lucid says production of the mid-size model will start in late 2026.
Lucid’s product lineup has consisted solely of luxury models with the Air sedan and Gravity SUV, but the electric vehicle maker plans to broaden its product portfolio with a new mid-size platform that it says will underpin three models. While production-ready versions of those models haven’t been revealed yet, Lucid highlighted some details of the new SUVs at its recent Investor Day event.

A Family of More Affordable SUVs
All three of the planned models for the new mid-size platform are SUVs, with Cosmos and Earth the names of two of the variants. No photos of any of the models have been released, but Lucid showed a silhouette of the Cosmos that resembles the Tesla Model Y’s, albeit with a little less rake to the rear roofline. The interior also follows in Tesla’s footsteps with its single, centralized dashboard screen. At 36 inches, it’s much wider than the central touchscreen in the Model Y, but it’s a simpler screen setup than the dual displays in the Air and Gravity.
Like other Lucids, the mid-size vehicles will have an efficiency focus, with a projected 4.5 miles per kilowatt-hour; Lucid says a 69-kWh battery in the Cosmos equals 300 miles of range. Standout efficiency lets Lucid achieve desired range estimates with smaller, less expensive batteries, and smaller batteries can also be charged faster. When DC fast-charging, Lucid estimates the Cosmos will add up to 200 miles of range in 14 minutes versus the Gravity’s 11 minutes.
The mid-size SUVs will use Lucid’s new Atlas electric drive unit, which is an example of how Lucid puts its focus on efficiency into practice; the drive unit is smaller, lighter and simpler than those in the Air and Gravity, according to the automaker. It’ll still deliver impressive acceleration, however, as Lucid says the mid-size model will be able to go from 0-60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds.
Why This Matters to EV Shoppers
Lucid is following a familiar path trodden by other EV makers like Tesla and Rivian that first launched expensive luxury models before expanding their lineups with less expensive offerings. Less expensive is relative, however; even though Lucid expects its new mid-size SUV to start at less than $50,000, base prices for the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model Y are considerably less than that. With the Lucid mid-size model carrying a premium price tag, it’ll have to deliver a premium experience.
