The new 2026 Jeep Cherokee is about to hit showrooms across America, and it’s sporting a plugless, traditional-style hybrid from the brand instead of the plug-in hybrid Jeeps we’re used to. Our first drive of the new Cherokee showed it to be pretty impressive in its operation and refinement, but its fuel economy is only mid-pack when you compare it to the main compact SUV hybrid competitors, including the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V hybrid.

Some are better, some are worse, but there’s enough variation in the powertrains to warrant a deeper look into how the new Cherokee stacks up on paper and why it probably isn’t more efficient than it is.

How the 2026 Jeep Cherokee’s Fuel Economy Measures Up

The new Cherokee uses a combination of a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission that uses a planetary gearset with integrated electric motors instead of a traditional belt-style CVT used by other automakers. It has a 1.06 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, as well, which is big enough to move the Cherokee under electric power very briefly at low speed or steadily at cruising speeds up to 62 mph, according to the manufacturer. The result: EPA-estimated fuel economy of 37 mpg combined, which is not too shabby, but certainly isn’t best-in-class.

Look at the numbers for the RAV4 — it’s practically stunning how much more efficient its rating is versus the rest of the segment. It runs away from the rest of the pack, but sometimes EPA-published ratings are hard to achieve in the real world, which is why we plan to put a new RAV4 to the test very soon. The Cherokee fits mid-pack if we base things on the combined rating.

Is the 2026 Cherokee Powerful Enough?

So why would the Cherokee’s fuel economy, while still excellent, not be better? Is it overpowered or tuned differently? Is it a matter of different equipment? The total system output of the Cherokee’s hybrid powertrain is 210 horsepower and 230 pounds-feet of torque, which is also solidly mid-pack in terms of grunt. Its hybrid system is also a little different thanks to its different type of CVT, but other automakers like Kia and Hyundai actually use a traditional geared transmission instead of a CVT, and the Hyundai gets slightly better ratings than the Cherokee.

The Cherokee certainly doesn’t feel underpowered when driving around town; its electric motors help with acceleration to allow for decent responsiveness when called upon. The Hyundai and Kia offer up the most power out of all of the offerings despite having small 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engines like the Cherokee does. The RAV4 makes more power than most of the field, which is extraordinary given its superior fuel economy ratings.

The Possible Culprit: The Cherokee Is Porky!

So, why doesn’t the Cherokee have better fuel economy than it does? It’s not overpowered, and it’s not under-equipped. We have to turn to the spec sheets for a possible culprit, and I think we may have found it: The Cherokee is significantly heavier than all the other competitors. The official curb weight for a 2026 Cherokee is 4,295 pounds, according to Jeep, which is several hundred pounds heavier than everything else on the list.

The Cherokee is not just portlier than everything else on the list, it’s considerably heavier than some other hybrid AWD competitors. And it’s from looking at this that we have a better idea of why the RAV4, the lightest SUV in this group, does as well as it does — the Cherokee is almost 600 pounds heavier. That’s like always carting around three extra passengers in your car at all times. It’s no wonder the Cherokee is only finishing mid-pack with that kind of extra heft. But it also makes us wonder why the CR-V hybrid, at 3,869 pounds, isn’t doing that much better than the Cherokee given that it’s 426 pounds lighter. Weight isn’t everything, of course, but the heavier you are, the harder it is to achieve efficiency.

Given that the Cherokee is built off the STLA Large platform that also underpins electric vehicles like Dodge Charger Daytona, Jeep Recon and Jeep Wagoneer S, weighing less might not have been as big a priority as being flexible, as this platform is meant to accommodate a variety of powertrains, from electric to gasoline to hybrid.
