Expert 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 review

Key Points

  • Pricing for the 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 starts at $46,570 (all prices include $1,475 destination charge).
  • No major changes for 2026
  • Electric SUV with up to 291 miles of range

It’s been a rocky couple of years for the Volkswagen ID.4. VW had to pause production of the electric SUV midway through 2024, then resumed building only versions with the larger battery pack in February. For the 2026 model year, the entry-level battery has (for now, at least) been dropped entirely; the only other change is that the ID.4 now sports a North American Charging Standard port, which allows owners to use the nation’s single largest DC fast-charging network, Tesla’s Superchargers. (A standard adapter allows drivers to continue using Combined Charging System stations, as well.)

Release Date and Pricing

The 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 is on sale now. Pricing is as follows, with all-wheel drive $3,900 extra on all but the Pro S Plus, where it’s standard:

  • Pro: $46,570
  • Pro S: $51,670
  • Pro S Plus: $59,130

Trim Levels and Safety Features

The 2026 ID.4 lineup gets a lot clearer when you ignore the battery designation and drivetrain layout: There’s just the base variant, the S and the S Plus.

The entry-level, rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro rides on 19-inch wheels; AWD examples get 20s. The trim on a whole features LED exterior lighting, cloth upholstery, manually adjustable and heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging and seven speakers. A 12.9-inch touchscreen handles infotainment functions with navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive safety suite is standard on trims and includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering, lane change assist, blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert. Automated parking, front and rear parking sensors, road-sign recognition and automatic high beams are also standard.

Both RWD and AWD versions of the ID.4 S get 20-inch wheels, as well as upgraded LED headlights that turn with the steering wheel, a thin LED strip connecting the headlights across the nose, illuminated front and rear VW logos, and a panoramic moonroof. Inside, the S features synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and upgraded ambient lighting.

A black roof and 21-inch wheels differentiate the range-topping Pro S. It also gains a 360-degree camera system, heated outboard rear seats, tri-zone automatic climate control and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Powertrain Specs and Range

Don’t let VW’s naming of the ID.4 trim levels confuse you. “Pro” used to refer to the larger battery pack. Now that the 62-kilowatt-hour battery is seemingly gone from the lineup, you can ignore that word — every 2026 ID.4 has an 82-kWh pack. Rear-drive ID.4s have a single electric motor generating 282 horsepower and 402 pounds-feet of torque. In AWD variants, a second motor powering the front wheels raises total output to 335 hp.

The RWD ID.4 has an EPA-rated range of 291 miles; range drops to 263 miles with AWD. Capable of DC fast charging at up to 175 kilowatts, VW says the ID.4 can replenish its battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
