What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • Volkswagen is stopping production of the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tenn., assembly plant in mid-April.
  • Remaining 2026 ID.4 inventory will be available to dealers.
  • There will be a future version of the ID.4 for U.S. shoppers.

Volkswagen announced it will halt production of its ID.4 electric SUV in the U.S. to make room for 2027 Atlas production, but a future version of the ID.4 is planned.

The ID.4 isn’t the only electric vehicle to be paused or discontinued this year, but the SUV has been around for a relatively long time considering it was one of the first mass-market EVs that came in a normal, everyday friendly size. Unfortunately, it also came with odd controls and screens that limited its appeal and often kept it from making the grade for some of our recommendations.

Volkswagen has been vocal about its turnaround from such controls, and hopefully, the next ID.4 will use more normalized controls, such as traditional switches for the windows as well as more buttons and dials for an easier-to-use multimedia and climate control system.

Until then, after production ceases in mid-April, the remaining ID.4 inventory will go on sale.
