Best first car, but certainly not a dream car

I got my Silver Prius as a first car which I paid about $4k after taxes for. I've had it for over a year now and have had absolutely 0 issues with it. No battery problems, no reliability problems, it's been outstanding. Some of the panels on the interior shake and rattle, the subwoofer in the driver side door had the foam pop out, so that rattles. The seats are comfortable for an hour to hour and a half. But after that there's some noticeable discomfort, which may be due to the design of the seats, or their age. It's also certainly not a looker, nor is it a massive performer. But it gets out of its own way when you need it to and it has a nice info panel on the interior. As a first car for a teenager, it's one of the best you can get due to fuel savings. But as a second car, I would skip another Prius, and go for something like a Chevrolet Volt, Bolt, or the upcoming Tesla Model 3.

good car

I got this car used for 4 years now and no major problem. Confort is just good, handle his like all toyota cars too much assistance on the wheel but respond, mecanics very good. the car was 86000 miles, change the water pump and drive belt at 140,000 miles for $450. The car has enought room for 4 adult or 2 adult and 3 kids. Gas efficient was for a full tank 14 gallons around 350 miles for summer and 300 miles in winter mix of higway and city. Only probem was in winter when the temperature goes under -1F the car will not work correctly in D position for go you have to go in B position for 10 minute probably due to the low temperature and the car can take time to warm up cause of the electric engine and small gas engine. But in anyway it's a very reliable car for the gas mileage and fiability.

Lots of Homework

I did a LOT of homework on the Toyota Prius since I initially did not plan on buying one. A friend got a 2010 and I wanted to spend less but needed a car that was very reliable with great gas mileage. I test drove a 2005 that someone was selling and liked the way the car felt. It was taken care of meticulously and priced right. After I got the car, I LOVED the fact that this 2005 has Bluetooth, great features such as energy consumption monitor, auto climate control, GPS, radio auto search (for categories of stations such as Rock, Religion, Easy Listening, etc.) The car is very roomy, very comfortable and has plenty of power when needed. Of course I actually enjoy sitting in traffic now that I get 45-55 mpg which is so much better than the 20 mpg I was getting with other cars. Not sure if I'll be able to let my kids borrow it when they learn to drive since I love it so much. Definitely a great choice!

Second Prius, 3rd hybrid

I used to own a 2003 Prius that had 252000 miles when traded. No major problems. I then bought a 2009 Altima Hybrid, no problems there either but the gas mileage can't compare. Driving the 2005 Prius at first was not comfortable. My shoulders ached after a long drive. You sit much higher than in the Altima but after a day or two my body adjusted. In the first 4 weeks of ownership (it had 175000 when we bought it) we placed over 3700 miles on the car. Gas mileage for each tank has been between 51 and 53 MPG. Plenty of room in the trunk (especially with the extra space under the back deck). The car flew through inspection. I look forward to many more happy miles.

Amazing, no repairs in 8+ years

We were thinking about replacing our 05 Prius with 143K miles on it, with an AWD Subaru, but then we thought my God, no repairs at all all this time, just basic maintentance, why should we trade it in now, it's like FREE now. So, we will re-eval trading in maybe a year from now, possibly. In our 143K we've done a 10K mile trip around the country, been to Key West from Virginia a dozen times. Seriously, never any mechanical problems, not even the brakes, never a breakdown. At our reacent 142K mile xx up, they said great shape, suggest first change of spark plugs ($187), brakes still great (original). We cant believe how good this car still is, and averaging 45ish mpg right now on the original sparks. I highly recommend this car, just make sure all the basic maintenance intervals have been done.

Watch out for that Hybrid Battery!

I have an 05 Prius, 8 & 3 months old, 93K miles on it. The hybrid battery just went. It has a warranty of 8 years / 100K miles, and of course it dies a couple months after the warranty expires. Toyota corporate/dealerships say its past warranty, too bad. The cost of replacement is $3500, which completely negates any positives from gas mileage over the years. The brakes have also been most troublesome than average. No issues with power train. Personally, I'm never buying another hybrid or toyota again given the cost of the hybrid batter and that it dies a couple months after warranty.

Great Car anytime

My first Prius is amazing! As a 2005 it's 8 years old, but still got 50.4 mpg on the 16 mile trip back(through rush hour city traffic) from the dealership! Surprisingly spacious inside, more pep than I thought. Not as stylish as other cars, but happy to be saving so much gas!

Ok car.

12 volt battery failed within 1 week of ownership. I took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that I must have left something on. The car failed to start 2 more times. I replaced the faulty 12 battery meyself. I now waiting for the next failure.
