What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • Nearly every version of the Tesla Model Y has more than 300 miles of range.
  • The Premium Rear-Wheel Drive trim can go 357 miles on a charge.
  • The only more affordable electric vehicle with a longer range is the closely related Tesla Model 3.

Tesla may no longer have the EV market to itself as it did back when it launched the first modern mass-market electric car in 2012, but the brand still holds an invaluable distinction in the world it helped create. Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 offer more driving range for less money than any other EVs available today.

By the Numbers

To get the most range for your money, you’ll need to step up to the Premium trim level, which starts at $46,380 for a rear-wheel-drive Model Y and $50,380 for an all-wheel-drive version (all prices include destination). The Model Y Premium can travel up to an EPA-estimated 357 miles on a charge with RWD and 327 miles with AWD. As is generally the case with EVs, maximizing range requires sticking with the smallest available wheels and tires. Larger wheels and tires tend to weigh more, therefore consuming more energy to turn.

Prior to 2026, Premium was the Model Y’s base trim, but for 2026, Tesla rolled out the lower-priced Standard spec, which drops the price of entry $5,000 for the RWD SUV and a whopping $7,000 with AWD. You can see exactly what you forfeit for those savings here.

Trim Driveline Standard Range (Miles) and Wheel Size Optional Range (Miles) and Wheel Size 0-60 MPH (Seconds) Price (With Destination)
Base RWD 321 (18-inch wheels) 303 (19-inch wheels) 6.8 $41,380
Base AWD 294 (18-inch wheels) 283 (19-inch wheels) 4.6 $43,380
Premium RWD 357 (19-inch wheels) 344 (20-inch wheels) 5.4 $46,380
Premium AWD 327 (19-inch wheels) 303 (20-inch wheels) 4.6 $50,380
Performance AWD 306 (21-inch wheels) None 3.3 $58,880

Tesla Model Y Maximum Range Vs. Competitors

While a handful of EVs now offer more than 400 miles of range — and the Lucid Air Grand Touring can travel a bladder-busting 512 miles between plugs — those vehicles are all considerably more expensive than the Model Y. Perusing our list of the electric cars with the longest range, you’ll notice that the only EV that is cheaper than the Model Y and has a longer range is the closely related Model 3. Both Teslas have a decided edge compared to similarly priced EVs.
