What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • The new all-electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door is a direct competitor to high-performance variants of the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT.
  • Two trims available at launch with the GT55 and GT63
  • Peak output from the tri-motor drivetrain is 805 horsepower in the GT55 and 1,153 hp in the GT63

The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door has landed and with it, a whole heap of drama, glamour and signaling for Mercedes-Benz’s performance sub-brand. Parallel to how the prior generation of 4-Door AMG GT played foil to certain hi-po grades of the Porsche Panamera, look to this all-new, all-electric sedan to put its charger squarely in the pie of the hottest Porsche Taycans.

… Which, all things considered, is a bit surprising. A moderate retraction in electric-vehicle development and product lines gradually gains steam with each cancellation, and expensive, specialized performance variants feel the squeeze. Development of Audi’s RS6 e-Tron is kaput, as is Porsche’s “EV-only” approach to the forthcoming next-generation 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. The base R/T trim of the Dodge Charger EV is gone, as is the planned top-level Banshee super-EV. That’s not including the significant amount of non-performance-oriented EVs culled due to low demand and struggling brand alignment.

That’s in the U.S., at least. The same cannot be said for adoption in both Europe and China, with particularly strong all-electric demand for the latter that’s fueled (or, uh, charged) a wide breadth of EVs from a dizzying array of automakers. We’re ignoring all discourse on the home-government subsidization of the Chinese automotive industry and the American market protectionism for this discussion, but I’ll be darned if the new GT 4-Door doesn’t feel suspiciously aligned to Chinese automotive aesthetics.

Or does it? I’m not sure. Despite the wailing found in social media comments and general reactionary hot takes, this sleek, androgynous hyper-sedan doesn’t look that much different than the outgoing generation nor the current Porsche Taycan — and let’s not forget the departing GT 4-Door was hardly a handsome sled. In person, I find the new sedan moderately sleek and tacticool at best, and somewhat anonymous and corny at worst, the latter particularly in the odd, disjointed rear grille.

Do Mercedes EVs Have Fake Shifting?

  • Takeaway: The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door is the company’s first vehicle to incorporate simulated shifting, in this case mimicking the last-gen Mercedes-AMG GT R.

I suspect most of the negative internet hoopla stems from the new GT 4-Door’s status as an EV and not entirely on any stylistic awkwardness. If this had ye olde twin-turbo V-8 instead of its triple-axial-flux electric motors (more on that in a sec), the comment section would be playing quite the different tune — though the car does have a whiff of V-8 about it, and it’s unlikely to endear the haters further. In the same vein as Hyundai’s N e-Shift and Honda’s S+ Shift tech, the 2027 GT 4-Door incorporates a soaring, digitized V-8 soundtrack with accompanying simulated transmission shifting and integrated bass rumbling in the seats.

Personally, I find this faux-shifting tech to be anathema. Barring any crass metaphors, simulated shifting lands squarely in uncanny valley, the experience overwhelmingly ersatz and disingenuous regardless of brand or application. I don’t like it, and you (the automotive enthusiast) shouldn’t, either; it’s not the best of both worlds, but the worst, and any adoption only encourages bad behavior from the automakers.

How Much Power Does the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Have?

  • Takeaway: The new GT 4-Door packs 805 hp in GT55 trim and 1,153 hp in the GT63.

Whew! All right, deep breath. We’re back. We’re back! The lame V-8 sound schtick aside, the engineering and performance of the new GT 4-Door is astounding enough that its controversial styling and faux-shift tech might not even matter. Initially offered in GT55 and GT63 grades, the tri-motor powertrain returns a stunning peak output of 805 hp and 1,328 pounds-feet of torque in the former and 1,153 hp and 1,475 pounds-feet in the latter. A sprint from 0-60 mph will jelly your eyes and smooth your brain at a manufacturer-estimated 2.4 seconds for the GT55 and 2.3 seconds for the GT63, with 0-124 mph occurring in just 6.8 and 9.0 seconds, respectively.

Breathtaking performance, but notably trailing the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT to 60 mph by 0.2 second. Ridiculous, I know, but consider Mercedes-AMG’s deservedly proud promotion of its new axial-flux motor tech and how despite the entire system’s low combined weight of 309 pounds, the AMG GT carries some additional 400 pounds over the moderately smaller Porsche. Mercedes claims each axial-flux motor is just 3.5 inches in width; extremely impressive, and I can only imagine the packaging benefits gained by this svelteness, but will I feel any difference behind the wheel when compared to other more traditional electric motors? I’ll have to wait until I get behind the wheel for that.

How Fast Can the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Charge?

  • Takeaway: If you can find the right charger, Mercedes claims up to a 600-kilowatt charge rate from its 800-volt, 800-amp architecture.

Here’s one metric I know I’ll be completely unable to enjoy, at least for the time being: a 10%-80% recharge in just 11 minutes on a 600-kilowatt charger. As of this writing and to my knowledge, there’s no public DC fast charger available in the U.S at above 500 kW, and even that’s hen’s teeth. Most of the fastest chargers peak at 350 kW in ideal conditions, so expect the GT 4-Door to be suckin’ electrons through a straw until the infrastructure catches up to its 800-volt, 800-amp architecture.

Both GT55 and GT63 whizz around on the same 106-kilowatt-hour battery pack, deriving trick Formula One-derived tech and an oil-cooling setup to keep temps down and power delivery both dense and consistent through its charge cycle. According to the overly optimistic European test-cycle ratings, Mercedes claims a 370-470 mile range that I expect to land near 320 miles when certified through the EPA’s ratings.

Of course, there’s a platoon of performance tech backing this tremendous power. The new AMG.EA platform incorporates the battery pack as a stressed member, supported by front-and-rear multilink suspension with standard adaptive air ride and available AMG Active RIde Control with triple-chamber air springs and active roll stabilization. Rear steering is standard, as are front ceramic discs and rear steel discs.

Given I had but mere minutes to poke around the GT63 at a ritzy, celeb-packed debut in Los Angeles, I wasn’t able to peek inside and take stock of the screen-and-carbon-fiber wonderland that awaits customers. A trio of screens forms the core dash, with a 10.2-inch driver display, 14-inch center infotainment and 14-inch passenger display holding the majority of climate, media and vehicle controls. A trio of physical knobs on the center console tunnel control “Response,” “Agility” and “Traction,” the first two toggling accelerator mapping and cornering behavior, respectively.

How Much Does the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Cost?

  • Takeaway: No pricing information is available as of yet, but prices are expected to be between $125,000 and $200,000 depending on trim.

As an ultra-high-performance EV hyper-sedan, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door is a successful and well-executed product. As a replacement for its twin-turbo V-8-powered, four-door muscle-bruising predecessor, I’m not so sure the spirit is equivalent — but per the attending Mercedes executives, it doesn’t have to be. With the EQ brand gradually approaching a decade of existence, Mercedes is an experienced player in a maturing market that should know the trends and taste of its consumer base. Should.

No pricing is available yet for either trim, but don’t expect the GT55 to start anywhere under $125,000 or the GT63 under $150,000.
