See Every Photo We Took of the 2027 Rivian R2’s Interior
What Car Shoppers Need to Know
- The 2027 Rivian R2 is an all-new mid-size electric SUV.
- It’s similar in size to the Tesla Model Y, outside and in.
- The R2 employs attractive materials like those in the larger R1S.
Rivian has started delivering the initial run of R2s to customers, and we are fresh off our first drive of the all-new electric SUV. It made a strong impression: Detroit Bureau Chief Aaron Bragman called the R2 “the first electric SUV that doesn’t come with a compromise in any area.” That’s true of the range, the power and the cabin, which is richly finished like Rivian’s larger R1S and R1T. Check out our gallery of the R2’s interior below.

Interior Size
The R2 is close in size to the Tesla Model Y. It’s a few inches shorter in length and a few inches taller. It’s some 15 inches shorter in length than the R1S, but it actually has significantly more rear-seat space. If you’re a veteran EV shopper looking for context, the R2’s interior measurements are within tenths of an inch of the Model Y’s. The Rivian offers 40.9 and 40.4 inches of headroom front and rear, respectively, and 41.4 and 40.4 inches of legroom. If you’re more familiar with gas-powered SUVs, that’s about what you’ll find in the Honda CR-V’s front seat and the R2’s front and rear seats. Cargo volume measures 28.7 cubic feet behind the second-row seats and 79.4 cubic feet with them folded — less than the Model Y and CR-V with the seats up but more than both with the seats down.
Interior Quality
Rivian has established itself as a purveyor of smart, distinctive — but far from overwrought — design. The R2 continues in that vein with a sharp cabin rendered in high-quality materials. The palette is familiar from the R1: The fabrics, salvaged wood and soft-touch plastics will feel like home to current Rivian owners.
A standard panoramic moonroof contributes to a feeling of airiness in the initial run of R2s, but if you want to feel that air, the R2 has more openings than many SUVs. Its rear window retracts into the liftgate like the Toyota 4Runner’s does, and the rear quarter windows behind the backseat power open, pivoting into a vent position like a minivan’s.
Technology and Controls
Unlike so many other brands that are integrating their digital instrument panels and infotainment screens into a single display, Rivian leaves the two separate. The slim instrument panel integrates seamlessly into the dashboard without dominating it, and two large scroll wheels on the steering wheel make it easy to adjust audio, climate control and drive-mode settings without taking your eyes off the road. Rivian is still holding out against Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This denial of familiarity is usually frustrating, but Rivian’s in-house infotainment is so intuitive that Bragman didn’t mind.
When the entry-level R2 eventually arrives, it will carry a base price around $45,000, according to Rivian. Everything we like about the R1 for some $30,000 less makes the R2 highly compelling.
