Honda is recalling more than 440,800 examples of its Odyssey minivan over an issue with the side and side curtain airbags that may cause them to deploy unexpectedly.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2018-22 Odysseys. The side and side curtain airbag deployment calibrations in these vehicles may be too sensitive due to a software error within the supplemental restraint system electronic control unit. As a result, the airbags may deploy unexpectedly over impacts like potholes, speed bumps and road debris, increasing the risk of injury.

As of April 2, Honda is aware of 25 injury reports from this issue and no reports of death.

To resolve the issue, dealers will reprogram the SRS ECU software or replace the ECU; both fixes are free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 25, but those with further questions in the meantime can contact the automaker at 888-234-2138 (Honda’s designation for this recall is UNW), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
