Ford is recalling more than 1.3 million examples of its F-150 pickup truck over an issue that may lead to a loss of vehicle control.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2015-17 F-150s. The signal between the transmission range sensor and powertrain control module may be lost, causing the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into 2nd gear. A sudden downshift into 2nd gear may result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

To resolve the issue, dealers will update the powertrain control module software for free. Interim letters notifying owners of the issue are expected to be mailed April 27; a second letter will be sent out once a remedy is available, likely sometime in July. Those with further questions can contact the automaker at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 26S28), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
