Why can't Detroit figure this out?

I LOVE owning this car. It feels SO good to fill it up half as often as my old Lexus ES300. I am hardly affected by gas prices at all, and I love it. One minor thing I like: it fits into parking spaces easily, good turning radius. Overall, this car feels good because you are using so little gas.

Fuel friendly and FUN!

Have had the vehicle three weeks. Drove 439 miles on the first tank of gas--then filled the tank with only 9.1 gallons! WOW! I drive long distances, mostly on the country roads and now easily average slightly over 50mpg. It is technologically interesting and fun--it is so cool to start the car with a push button--I love the little gizmo to put the car into gear. I've left the "key" inside joking that nobody could figure out how to steal it! Love my new little car!

Great Little Car

A great commuter car for me. The first 5 minutes of operation produces moderate mileage, thereafter the touring edition starts to demonstrate its operating economy. I have not gotten close to the old EPA mileage estimate, but I get about 47 mpg, which is a little better than the new combined estimate of 46 mpg. Thigh support is not quite enough for a guy with a 31" inseam. Otherwise, the front seats are fine. Controls and such are not always the usual run of the mill switches and knobs but a touch screen, which is fine but takes getting used to. I have almost no long distance driving experience with the Prius, so I am not able to comment on it for long trips.

Socially responsible purchase end Dec 2007

For all the money one pays for a new 2007 "matchbox" Prius, it is disappointing to see the fast deterioration of the exterior paint job (Silver). With 2000 miles driven slowly due to winter snow conditions, this new Prius has more paint chips than my 2000 Blazer which was driven cross country for 7yrs. No one at the dealership cares. I know there is a little statement that they are not responsible for paint chips, but these are deep and numerous. When I wanted an extra coat of paint at time of purchase I was told no need as Toyota has 5 layers- best anywhere. Maybe 5 layers of poor quality, but not acceptable product protecting your $30,000 investment. I can't imagine what it will look like in another month! Also, this vehicle is little value if it has such a small interior that you end up borrowing everyone else's old clunker for the weekend. Mileage is no where near claims, but is better than anything aound. I can't help but think that if our Prius were built outside the country instead of California, it would be a better quality product. What a disappointment!

I LOVE MY PRIUS!!

This prius is the smoothest, roomiest family car out there. Yes, FAMILY car! One may tend to think it as small, but there is lots of leg and sitting room in front and back seats (more than in my mother's Camry), and the hatchback is spacious with extra storage underneath floorboard. My children think mom is so cool now, driving a hybrid. It has great added features, such as the smart key, calendar with memo pad (great for moms) and GPS (an extra). My husband was hesitant about the hybrid car, but he is amazed and loves to drive it. We love to watch the screen to see our MPG as we drive. I am not getting 60 MPG, but in the 50's---still great! I traded in a gas-guzzler and I can't believe what I got for the price difference! Most of all I feel great because I am doing my part in cleaning up our environment. If you are even curious about the prius---DRIVE ONE! and shop around because shopping and comparing (although exhausting) saved me $3,000! I LOVE MY PRIUS!

Should have purchased the Honda Civic Hybrid

The navigation, audio, and telephone features of this car enable and disable themselves for completely unknown reasons. I have almost been in a serious accident several times trying to figure out why the various screens lock me out of important features while in stop-and-go traffic. It is almost impossible to find an alternate route when traffic is stopped without pulling off the road. And all of this with a passenger attempting to use the equipment. Toyota seems to be suffering from a serious quality and customer service problem. The toyota service centers are rude and slow and simply laugh at you when you ask questions about the features of the car. I wish I had taken more time testing the master control screen while test driving the car. If I had I would have realized this vehicle is very difficult to use. Trying to adjust the sound volume or the temperature with screens randomly locking out features is nearly impossible. Worse is the "voice recognition." When I say "70 degrees" it usually turns the temperature to 78! Anyone want to purchase a used 2007 Prius?

A "Driving" Experience

I bought the 2007 Prius Touring Edition after a most positive experience with the Camry Hybrid. The Prius is a different car in many respects ... its styling is a big clue on this. The controls and instrumentation for the car is interesting albeit a challenge at first. (While I like it, the instruments took some personal adjust before being comfortable with it.) I took option 2 because it was the lowest level of options offering electronic vehicle stability which I insist on for safety reasons. Air bags all the way around was also key in this purchase decision. Tuned suspension, fog lights and the headlights are desired and standard with the Touring Edition. As suggested by others, I bought a less expensive GPS which I can move from car to car. I was disappointed to see this car is safety rated at 4 stars but not 5 stars. Gas mileage is uncertain for the moment. I got about 49 mpg driving 250 miles from the dealership to my home. Subsequently, I had to fill up with gasahol (winter EPA requirement), I drove nearly all city miles at an elevation around one mile above sea level and the weather turned cold. Result, the mpg seems to have taken a dive to the mid-30's. Now, after about 1,000 miles the mpg is on the upswing and I am getting about 40 mpg in cold, around town driving. (I went through the "hybrid learning curve" on my Camry hybrid.) I expect to have a significant gas mileage improvement as warm weather returns, the tires adjust to being driven, and summer blended gasoline is available. The car has been perfectly reliable thus far. It is comfortable but not excessively so. I do enjoy milking the gas mileage by anticipating traffic, traffic controls, while applying moderate acceleration and judicious use of the brakes.

Impressive Car with a Few Minor Disappointments.

I purchased a '07 Prius, as I drive from Fallbrook, CA to Palm Desert, CA twice each week. (My Prius is 2 months old and has 7,000 miles.) The car has to be one of the quietest I have owned. But Toyota certainly could do a better job on some of the interior features. For example, only one window switch is lighted on the driver's door--not even the power mirror control or the power door lock switch. On the other doors, nothing is lighted. Open the armrest at night to find anything or to plug in the MP3 Player, and good luck--pitch black inside. The lighted steering wheel controls are practically useless due to their severe lack of illunination. Include the rather dimly lighted rear cargo area with one small light on the left-hand side of the back interior. My car has package #5, which includes the so-called upgraded nine-speaker stereo. The sound is just fair and is definitely not competitive sounding with other car stereos in the same price range. In addition, why not charge a bit more and include XM radio. The navigation is somewhat behind the times, too, and not the easiest to use. With all this said, I am overall pleased with the quality, comfort, and performance of the car. I am averaging between 47.7 and 49.8 MPG and have reached mileage in the very low 50 MPG's. As a side note, I had pinstrip added to the car, and it helps very much. Toyota should consider dressing up the car with the above mentioned items and they would have a bigger winner on their hands! It's unfortunate that I wrote Toyota Customer Service twice regarding the few issues I have with the car, and no one has had the courtesy to write back.

Nowhere near the published fuel economy

I recently purchased a 2007 Toyota Prius hybrid sedan. I love it. However, Toyota has told a big lie in their publishing the Prius? gas mileage figures. They say it gets 60 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway. Good luck! There is no way they could get this kind of performance without their test track being all downhill. In the weeks since my purchase, I've been driving my Prius extremely conservatively. I rarely exceed the speed limit, I accelerate slowly, and I decelerate slowly, which aggravates the drivers behind me. I've been passed by just about everything on the road and I'm only getting 41 mpg in the city ? not the 60 mpg Toyota advertises. And I'm not using the air conditioner. After several hundred miles I reset the mpg computer and drove it like everyone else drives. The mpg dropped to 27 mpg. If Toyota had said that the Prius gets 45 mpg or even 50 mpg in the city, I might forgive them. But actual results are not even close to advertised. If I didn't like everything else about the car, I'd return it to Toyota as a lemon.
