The Impreza has a lot to offer after its full redesign last year. While it shares its platform with Subaru’s Crosstrek (which is essentially a raised-suspension, SUV-ized version of the Impreza), this likable hatchback stands out in the compact-car class by offering standard AWD and well-rounded driving character at competitive prices. While the base four-cylinder performs dutifully, the punchier engine in the RS adds a welcome dose of extra passing power with a minimal penalty in fuel economy. The Impreza doesn’t feel as sporty as a Civic or Mazda3, but it nevertheless feels nicely controlled through tight corners and over rough pavement.
