By the Numbers
The 2027 Atlas is powered by an updated version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in its predecessor. Now, the turbo four puts out 282 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque, an increase of 13 hp but 15 pounds-feet less than the previous version.
What’s most promising is the 2027 model’s increased fuel economy. With standard front-wheel drive, the Atlas returns an EPA-rated 22/29/25 mpg city/highway/combined. That’s an improvement of 2 mpg across the board compared to the FWD 2026 model. With available all-wheel drive, the 2027 Atlas is rated at 20/27/23 mpg — again, 2 mpg better in every cycle.
| Powertrain | City MPG | Highway MPG | Combined MPG |
| Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder, FWD | 22 | 29 | 25 |
| Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder, AWD | 20 | 27 | 23 |
Versus the Competition
That 2-mpg increase vaults the Atlas from the bottom of its class to a spot firmly in the middle. Discounting the hybrid competition, the VW is now tied for the best fuel economy among mid-size three-row SUVs. Volkswagen says a hybrid Atlas will arrive with the model’s mid-cycle refresh, so we’ll see in a few years if the Atlas can challenge the best in its class for overall honors.
