Here’s What’s New with the 2027 Toyota GR86
What Car Shoppers Need to Know
- The Toyota GR86 gets minor drivetrain updates for 2027.
- New interior options become available.
- Pricing to be announced later in the summer
The current-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata has been in production since 2016, but Mazda’s engineers continually polish their little gem of a roadster. It got more power for 2019, then a new steering rack and limited-slip differential for 2024. Toyota is taking a similar approach with its GR86, an affordable rear-wheel-drive sports car that takes direct aim at the iconic Mazda (well, direct but with a fixed roof).

What’s New
Unless it’s painted the newly available Thunder exterior color, it’ll be hard to tell the 2027 GR86 from the 2026 model from the outside. Engineers recalibrated the throttle for smoother response and tweaked the shifter for improved feel in the downshift between 5th and 4th gears.
If you peek inside, you might also be able to distinguish the ’27 GR86 from older models. The new Cockpit Red interior features black synthetic leather with red leather accents, while a new all-black option does away with all color in the car’s cabin except, of course, black.

Versus Competitors
Other than the Miata, the GR86 and its Subaru BRZ twin don’t have any direct competitors. The field is so sparse that it makes sense to cross-shop the all-new 2026 Honda Prelude, a front-wheel-drive hybrid. While Toyota has yet to announce pricing for the 2027 GR86 — that’ll come closer to the start of sales in the summer — it’s unlikely to climb substantially from the 2026 model’s $31,995 base price (prices include destination fee). For comparison, the 2026 Miata is priced from $31,665 and the new Prelude, positioned as a more luxurious grand tourer complete with a backseat, starts at $43,195.
