What Truck Shoppers Need to Know

  • The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado will go on sale later this year with two all-new V-8s.
  • All variants will now use the 10-speed automatic.
  • A 16.3-inch central touchscreen and 12.2-inch digital instrument panel are standard on all trims, including the Work Truck.
  • Chevrolet says powertrain, towing and payload specs will be revealed closer to the on-sale date.

We got our first look at the all-new 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and while details are slim, we’re excited for most of what Chevrolet has in store for its next-generation half-ton pickup. Among the updates are two all-new V-8s: a 6.6-liter to replace the beleaguered 6.2 and a 5.7-liter in place of the trusty 5.3-liter. The Silverado’s appearance is somewhat revised but familiar, with new front styling and lighting and trim-specific design elements that range from “off-road” hoods for the ZR2, Trail Boss and Custom Trail Boss to premium-looking satin exterior finishes for the range-topping High Country.

New V-8s, Lots of Questions

While we know the displacement of the two new V-8s, we don’t know much else about them. Chevrolet claims the 6.6-liter will be the most powerful naturally aspirated V-8 in the half-ton pickup segment but hasn’t shared any power figures for it or the 5.7-liter. The outgoing 6.2 makes 420 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque; we would expect numbers closer to the C8 Corvette’s related 535-hp, 520 pounds-feet 6.7-liter V-8, but we’ll have to wait and see. The 3.0-liter diesel and 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder return for 2027, and all engines are paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 2.7-liter previously used an eight-speed.

Besides power figures, we also don’t know fuel economy, towing or payload specs for the new Silverado. While the new V-8s should keep it competitive with the bulk of the half-ton truck competition, we don’t yet know just how competitive.

More Tech Inside, Both Good and Silly

GM and Chevrolet are among our favorites when it comes to standard interior tech, and the Silverado continues that with a new standard 16.3-inch central touchscreen display and 12.2-inch digital instrument panel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, thankfully, unlike the omission of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in Chevrolet EVs; that’s the good news.

The silly part is that ZR2 and High Country trims add an 11.5-inch front passenger display. I’ve never found a good use case for passenger displays other than impressing buyers in the showroom. We don’t know what this one can do, so we’ll reserve full judgment, but I’m not optimistic.

Other interior upgrades include a new Multi-Flex center console that can be reconfigured into a work surface and a panoramic moonroof for the High Country. Additional materials upgrades in the High Country should help it compete better with ultra-luxe Ram 1500 models, too.

Multiple Flavors of Off-Road

Chevrolet isn’t cutting back popular off-road versions of its current Silverado. Buyers will be able to choose from the Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss, ZR2 and ZR2 Bison, depending on the desired level of equipment.

Custom Trail Boss and Trail Boss models get 2-inch lifts and 34-inch mud-terrain tires, while the ZR2 is equipped with 35-inch MTs under its 2-inch lift. The ZR2 also gets Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve shock absorbers and jounce dampers along with electronic-locking front and rear differentials. Chevy once again partnered with American Expedition Vehicles for the ZR2 Bison Edition, adding 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels, new front and rear bumpers, multiple skid plates and more.

A new Silverado trim called Silverado replaces the previous LT, and buyers who opt for a four-wheel drive Silverado trim get the Z71 off-road package as standard. As a side note: Making a trim level of the Silverado the “Silverado” and not having it be the base trim is going to lead to fun conversations for owners.

“Which Silverado do you drive?”

“The Silverado.”

“Yes, I know that. But which one?”

“The Silverado.”

[Repeat, old-time vaudeville curtain drops]

New Trim Lineup

The condensed Silverado lineup for 2027 is as follows:

  • Work Truck
  • Custom
  • Custom Trail Boss
  • Silverado
  • Trail Boss
  • High Country
  • ZR2

Notably absent from this lineup is anything specifically aimed at competing with the higher-performance offerings from Ford and Ram. There’s still no direct Ford F-150 Raptor or Ram 1500 TRX competitor, nor is there a performance version to compete against the newly announced Ram Rumblebee lineup or Ford F-150s with a dealer-installed, factory-warranteed supercharger. This has long been a criticism of Chevrolet’s approach to the Silverado 1500 — warranted or not — and it seems like that will continue.

When Will We Know More?

Chevy says the details of the 2027 Silverado 1500 will arrive between now and its expected on-sale date close to the end of 2026. Stay tuned for more as we know it.
