Three’s not a crowd — at least when it comes to the latest teaser of the redesigned 2024 Toyota Tacoma. The mid-size Taco will retain its six-speed manual transmission as the automaker revealed a photo of the pickup truck’s pedal setup showing a clutch. Prior to this teaser, Toyota has only shared a few details about what shoppers can expect, including the return of the off-road-oriented TRD Pro trim and the arrival of a new overlanding Trailhunter variant. Not much was revealed about the pickup’s powertrain, however.

The outgoing 2023 Tacoma currently offers a six-speed manual transmission for its four-wheel-drive models that have the available 278-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine; a six-speed automatic is standard on rear-wheel drive models with the base 159-hp, 2.7-liter four-cylinder and is available for the V-6. Toyota has not disclosed the Tacoma’s engine lineup for 2024, but its earlier teaser of the Tacoma TRD Pro revealed an i-Force Max badge, which is the name of the hybrid engine currently used in the full-size Tundra.

While the tally of new vehicles with a manual transmission dwindles, Toyota’s latest announcement means truck shoppers looking to row their own gears still have a choice to make: In addition to the Tacoma, the mid-size Jeep Gladiator currently offers a standard six-speed manual in addition to an available eight-speed automatic.

More details on the 2024 Tacoma, including its powertrain lineup and specs, are expected later in the year.
