It was only three model years ago that Hyundai released a designed Tucson, a model that earned a solid third place finish in our most recent Compact SUV Comparison Test and the vehicle's getting a mid-cycle update for the 2025 model year that include...
s some modest exterior changes, and really some significant interior updates that address some of the issues we've had with this vehicle. Let's take a look at what has changed for 2025. With its crease flanks, and wide grill, the Tucson is already one of the more distinctive SUVs you can buy in the compact class, and the changes for 2025 don't really alter that significantly, though there are some new lighting elements in the front, a new grill and new front and rear bumpers along with new alloy wheel designs. And this front end change is really what's most significant about it, and it really makes these lighting elements stand out more. The updates for 2025 are more apparent inside as the Tucson gets a new dashboard layout with this big, curved screen. It includes a 12.3-inch screen for the instrument cluster and another 12.3-inch screen for the Infotainment System. Now, the screen on the instrument cluster is optional, while the Infotainment Screen is standard, and you now get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, something that wasn't offered on the Tucson's previous biggest screen, to our constant frustration. One of the aspects of the prior Tucson that wasn't particularly well received was the touch-sensitive panel on the dashboard for many of the vehicle's controls. Now, that's been replaced with some physical controls that make it much more easy to use. You get physical volume knob, physical tuning knob, some dials for temperature control too, which is nice. Now, there are still some touch controls for climate right between those knobs, but overall, this is a setup that I think is gonna be much more usable. Hyundai has also changed the gear selector in the Tucson. It used to be a push button on the console for many trims, but they've moved it to a console twist knob style like what we've seen in the Sonata. And what that's done is it's allowed them to open up a lot of additional space on the console. They have this upper section here that has cup holders and a wireless charging pad for your phone, and there's this big, open space below it for extra stuff. In addition, they've also added this ledge right here on the dash for storing smaller items, so they've really made an improvement in terms of open storage space in the front of the cabin. The interior space for passengers is pretty similar to what it was before, but that's still good. There's good space in front for taller adults to drive, and also for someone taller to ride in the back at the same time. It's nice too that the backrest has a recline feature, that's standard, and it's located low on the side of the seat, so easy to reach if you wanna recline the back rest. The 2025 Tucson has carryover powertrains. The gas model is powered by a 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine that makes 187 horsepower and works with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the Hybrid and the Plugin Hybrid, which is this model here, have a turbocharged 1.6 liter four-cylinder. Now, in the Hybrid, it makes 231 horsepower total, and in the Plugin Hybrid, the system is rated at 268 horsepower. And this is the charge port here for the Plugin Hybrid, and it has a 7.2 kilowatt onboard charger. So when you're connected to level two service, it can replenish the battery in as little as two hours according to Hyundai, and that's pretty quick. Hyundai says the Gas-Powered Tucson will arrive at dealerships in June, while the Hybrid and the Plugin Hybrid version should show up later in the summer.
