The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid made its debut here at the 2025 Chicago Auto Show, and we wanted to see how it stacks up in some important areas versus the Honda CR-V Hybrid, one of the top selling compact Hybrid SUVs.
So we're gonna look at things like fuel efficiency, seating comfort, user interface, visibility, and cargo space to see which one does it better. The CR-V Hybrid is the more efficient of these two SUVs with up to 40 miles per gallon combined, but that's for the front wheel drive version. This all-wheel drive model of the CR-V Hybrid gets 37 miles per gallon combined, but both figures are a bit better than what the Forester Hybrid offers. It's rated at 35 miles per gallon combined, and all models have all-wheel drive. Both the Forester Hybrid and the CR-V Hybrid can comfortably see adults in the front and the backseat at the same time. But the Forester Hybrid has the advantage here, thanks to its airier, more open cabin, and that comes through in a few different ways. First is this dashboard that is lower than the dash in the CR-V Hybrid. This pretty good size windshield really opens up forward views. And while both of these have stadium-style seating in the second row seats you up a little bit higher, it's more apparent in the Forester Hybrid. And combined with the tall upright profile of this vehicle, it really makes for roomier back seat space, too. One area though, where the CR-V Hybrid has an advantage in terms of seating is its rear seat that tilts way far back. In terms of user interface, the CR-V Hybrid has the advantage, and it really comes down to the implementation and the number of physical controls on the dashboard. Where in the Forester Hybrid, a lot of the controls are consolidated into the vertical touchscreen, in the Honda, there's a separation between the multimedia screen controls and the climate controls below. And the climate controls are really easy to use. They're these big dials with buttons on either side. You can use 'em without really a second thought. or really having to look too hard at them when you're driving. Outward Visibility has long been a strength of Subaru models in general, and it's a strength here in the Forester Hybrid. It has big side windows that are bigger than those in the CR-V Hybrid, and that really helps you when you're checking your over-shoulder blind spot, or just being able to see cars as they move around you in traffic. The CR-V Hybrid has 21 cubic feet of cargo space, roughly, by cars.com measurements, to the Forester's approximately 16 cubic feet of space. And the difference really comes down to the height of the second row seat in the CR-V Hybrid and how that allows us to stack cargo higher because both of these cargo areas are wide and have a tall opening so you can fit big items in them. One advantage, though, the Forester has over the CR-V Hybrid is when the rear seat is folded in it, it's a flat extended load floor and there's not a little ledge like there is in the Honda. The Honda CR-V Hybrid is on sale now, and the Subaru Forester Hybrid goes on sale this spring. Both of 'em start at around $36,000, but if you want all-wheel drive in the CR-V Hybrid, you're looking at more than $37,000. Now, if you care more about a roomy interior with great outward visibility, the Forester Hybrid is your SUV. But if you like traditional controls and want a little bit more efficiency, you should look at the CR-V Hybrid.
