You might be familiar with British sports car maker, Lotus, from all of the two-seat sports cars that they've made over the last several decades. Or maybe from one very specific two-seat sports car that turned into a submarine about 40 years ago.
But that was really for a very specific application. You see, Lotus is about to get a new lease on life because they've got some new owners. It's Chinese automaker Geely, which also owns brands Polestar and Volvo, and a couple of others that you probably haven't heard of. But they've given Lotus a bunch of new technology and a bunch of new money and a new mandate. They're about to become a global electric performance brand. Yeah, they'll still make some two-seat sports cars, but they're also gonna be making things like this. This is the new Emeya. It's a four-seat, all-electric, four-door, high performance GT sedan coming from Lotus. It'll arrive as a 2025 model in late 2024 in the United States. Now we've had a good sneak peek at the new Emeya. And we're gonna take you through it to show you exactly what Lotus has created and where the brand is going. From a styling standpoint, the idea here is all about aerodynamics. This thing has a lot of active aerodynamics, in terms of active grill shutters and adaptive air dam. All of it is meant to improve the airflow through and over and underneath the vehicle. From a styling standpoint, it obviously doesn't look like anything that Lotus has created before, but it honestly doesn't look like anything that anyone has created before. But I like it. Powering the Emeya is going to be a twin motor setup on the first ones that come to our shores. It's gonna be making about 905 horsepower, and supposedly it's good for a zero to 60 time of just about 2.8 seconds. Now, it uses a 102 kilowatt hour battery pack, which is a pretty big pack for a car this size. And it can charge at 350 kilowatts, meaning it can go from about 10% charge to 80% charge, in right around 20 minutes, which is pretty good for any kind of electric car. The interior of the new Emeya is really quite nice. All of the materials in here are either sustainable or recycled or recyclable. So everything in here has a really great provenance to it. But the assembly quality, the stitching, the luxurious feel to everything, this is far nicer than anything I've ever seen in a Tesla Model S, or to be honest, a Mercedes-Benz EQE as well. You've got three screens in here. You've got a large central screen, which also acts as your touchscreen for pretty much all of the controls, including things like climate control, which is something we're never terribly big on, but we're getting used to it, I suppose. But there are two additional screens, some slim, smaller informational screens on the left and right side. One for the driver, one for the passenger. The driver's side one includes the basic necessities like speedometer, warning signs, external temperature, things like that. And the passenger one includes things like what day of the week it is, and maybe some audio information as well. The seats are extremely comfortable. This is a four-passenger version, so it's got bucket seats in the rear as well. And the center console, which extends all the way through to the back. The battery in here is fairly low in the floor, so you're really not having any issue in terms of headroom or seats that are up too high in the front or the back. So the whole thing looks to be pretty comfortable. Now, we'll know for sure once we actually get to drive one, probably sometime next year. Now the backseat's not quite as spacious as the front seat. And this is really kind of a mid-sized sedan. If you're thinking Porsche Taycan, you're probably in the right neighborhood, instead of something larger like a Lucid Air or a Model S. But there are some neat features back here. You've got these two bucket seats and you've got a lot of storage in the middle as well. But you've also got this touchscreen back here that controls things like audio and the local climate control as well. One thing you should not expect when the Emeya comes to the United States, are these. Instead of traditional side view mirrors, this version has camera mirrors that actually correspond to a display on the door inside the vehicle. They're not legal in the United States, unfortunately. So if you do wanna see something like this appear on a vehicle in the US, well, write your Congressman. We don't have the final pricing just yet, but if you think about the competitor set for the Emeya, it's gonna be things like maybe the Porsche Taycan, or the Lucid Air, or maybe even the Tesla Model S. So pricing around that area is not terribly far off from what it's likely going to be. Now when we do have all the final specs and the pricing and some seat time out on the road, you're gonna see all of that at Cars.com. (upbeat music)
