Transcript
In 2018, Dodge created the Challenger SRT Demon, a drag strip monster with 840 horsepower from its supercharged V8 engine.
Now you didn't think they were going to spend all of that money on engine development and only put it in 3,300 cars, did you? Well, they didn't. Now for 2019, you have this: this is the new Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. It has the demon engine, but it only makes 797 horsepower instead of 808 or 840 if you put the special gas in it. However, 797 horsepower is still plenty. We've come here to New Hampshire to a private track to see exactly what the new Redeye can do. And here are our three favorite things about the new Hellcat Redeye. <v Voiceover>The first thing is that new styling. The challenger has always looked retro cool, but the new Hellcat Redeye gets a new hood to allow that demon engine to breathe. It's a dual snorkel affair. It's fully functional, but it's also the reason Dodge says it only puts out 797 horsepower instead of over 800. That's the trade-off you make for being able to take your Redeye to 203 miles per hour instead of the Demon's limited 168 mile per hour top speed. The demon hood wasn't aerodynamically stable at the Redeye's top speed, so it's down a few horses, but you're really not going to miss them. The second thing I love about it is the interior. This really is the most comfortable, most spacious two door muscle car on the market right now. From the big seats front and back to the tall greenhouse that brings great visibility out those windows, the Challenger is just a really comfortable place to be. Combine it with the top-notch multimedia system, killer stereo, and lots of interior personalization options, and the new Challenger would easily be my choice over a Camaro or a Mustang if I had to live with it every day. Finally, the third thing I love about this car is its speed. That supercharged 6.2 liter V8 absolutely screams down straightaways, mixing the bellowing exhaust with the wailing supercharger in one of the best tracks laid down by any DJ. (engine revving) No, it doesn't handle all that well, it's much too heavy to really be a great track car. But out on the street, this thing has presence that few other cars in the world can match. Every enthusiast knows what it is and keeping your foot off that accelerator is nearly impossible. The new Hellcat will be on sale very soon at Dodge dealers around the country with a starting price of $61,745. But stepping up to the Redeye adds $11,000 to that total and the wide body kit adds another $6,000. So for a car like the one you see here, you'll be shelling out more than $87,000.
