(car engine roaring) Mazda's compact SUV has always been one of the more fun-to-drive in the segment, but a redesign for 2017 adds all sorts of goodies. So there's a lot more to like about the new CX-5. Let's check out four ways it's improved.
First, it's quieter. The old models wind and road noise really took loud to new levels and really annoyed, especially at highway speeds. For 2017, Mazda did a lot to make it quieter. They added sound deadening material in the cabin, reinforced door seals, and new acoustic glass. The results are a much quieter cabin. Second, the multimedia system got an update. Mazda moved the seven inch touchscreen to the top of the dash. It's placement is high and visibility is great, what's not, is how you control it. When the car is moving, the touchscreen is locked out and you have to use this knob on the center console. It pulls more focus from the road than using a touchscreen. Third, a couple of new features make the new CX-5 more competitive in its class this year. Mazda's adaptive cruise control system gets an updated forward facing camera that allows it to work all the way down to a stop. The old system shut down at speeds under 19 miles per hour. There's also a new sign recognition feature that displays street signs and the head-up display. Lastly, the backseat got some new convenience features. Two USB charging ports are a new addition, as are optional heated rear seats. Fourth, it's even more fun-to-drive this year. Horsepower is up slightly and Mazda made a couple other updates to keep it at the top of the fun-to-drive list, with tweaks to its steering, chassis, and throttle mapping. With ample power from direct steering and dynamic handling, the CX-5 nails sporty. In terms of cargo space and gas mileage, the CX-5 isn't the most practical or efficient SUV in the compact class, but it remains the most stylish and fun-to-drive. And changes for 2017 only up its appeal.
