(car starting) Subcompact SUV's are hot with all new entries, like the Toyota CHR and the Ford echo sport, joining relative veterans like the Honda HRV and this, the Jeep Renegade.
The Renegade stands out from the pack in some obvious ways like it's rugged boxy styling and the Trailhawk model's unexpectedly robust off-road capabilities, but also in some subtler, more playful ways too. We're going deeper to look at the hidden gems, thoughtfully peppered in the interior and exterior. They're designed to let you know you're driving a Jeep and an adventurous one at that. The exterior icons are pretty well hidden, but you'll find the Jeep grill embedded in the headlights and the taillights. On the windshield is one of my favorites, the sticker depicts a world war II military Jeep silhouette. Moving to the side, there's a spider inside the fuel door that says chow baby. It's a nod to Jeep's Italian parent automaker, Fiat. In the back, there's the silhouette of a hiker on a sticker at the base of the rear window, or is it big foot? (laughing) Inside, the theme continues with the to new adventures lettering around the ignition button. Look closely at the center console's small cubby to find a topography map of Moab, Utah, a favorite spot for hardcore off-roaders. Along those lines, there's also some mud splatter visible on the tachometer, a nod to the Trailhawk's off-road aspirations. Versions of the Jeep grill are visible inside the cabin too with one on the speaker surround, one tucked on the side of the rear view mirror housing, and one on the cargo hatch panel. Lastly, since 1941 lettering sits above the touchscreen on the dashboard. Another nod to the brand's heritage. Although the Renegade isn't our favorite sub-compact SUV. scoring in the bottom half of our challenge for its unrefined powertrain and its truck like handling. It's hidden Easter eggs definitely make it one of the more interesting vehicles in the class.
