Legendary reliability and resale value. The best overall truck I test drove. I would definitely recommend it as it has the design, power, comfort, features you want.

Considering a Tacoma -- I liked it

I've been thinking about purchasing a truck for a few years now and decided to go out and test drive a couple. One requirement is that it must have a locking differential. The Tacoma immediately came to mind since they've offered the TRD Off-Road package for years and I've always wanted one. I ruled out the new Chevys because I think they're hideous, however, I also checked out an F150. I was very impressed with the F150: the space, power and quiet. I read a lot about the jerky / hunting transmission in the Tacoma and a relative lack of power. I was also concerned about headroom because I'm about 6' tall. I've sat in and even ridden in a co-worker's Tacoma but I've never driven one. So I went and found a 4-door TRD Off-Road with the 5' bed. I was very impressed with the truck. The cab is rather intimate and while someone my size could ride in the back, it wouldn't be comfortable for long. This is far from a full-size truck but for a single guy or a couple, it would work fine. I especially like the Tacomas because of the high ground clearance and the large tires. The motor was smoother than I was expecting and the transmission was very smooth. I would have preferred a slightly firmer shifting transmission but I didn't detect too much hunting; perhaps I'd read so many bad reports about the transmission but the motor and transmission seemed to work well together and the truck accelerated fine in my opinion -- not effortlessly but with reasonable alacrity. My test drive was interesting and included about 10 miles of highway driving as well as about 5 miles of suburban and rural roads. I really liked the truck: it actually felt like "me" like something I could easily own. I plan to drive off-pavement and a friend strongly recommends a Wrangler as she loves hers, however, I just don't want a Jeep. The Tacoma has a very good resale value and the bed seemed a reasonable size for a homeowning single guy. The technology, however, feels a little dated and some things I'd like to have would include a brake-hold feature and a standard remote-start system. Disk brakes in the back also seem well overdue as well as making LED headlights standard as opposed to offering them as optional equipment. Overall, however, I'm seriously considering the truck.

Owned a FJ40, 1978 pickup, 1985 pickup

The straw that broke mt back was the 1994 3.0 piece 0f crap engine that Toyota kept making and when it had to be fixed I ended up with 14MPG??? Toyota said pound sand so I sold it and for 14MPG I got a Ford super duity. Touota built there rep. on the 22R engine but now they suck.

I'm more than happy.

I bought this truck to tow a small travel trailer. It's about 3100 pounds empty. Having just returned from a 1700 mile trip to Oregon I can say that it more than met the challenge. I am going to install airbags to reduce the stress on the rear suspension. Even with a weight distribution hitch 600 pounds of tongue weight plus stuff in the back dropped it down about an inch and 1/2. On short and long hills I more than kept up with the bigger trucks and bigger trailers. I was able to cruise of at least 60 and got (for towing) decent mileage. I really like that I can tow a trailer and commute around town Without feeling like I need a 40 acre field the turnaround in. I've had Ford's, Chevys and now Toyotas. There is no comparison when it comes to reliability. Toyota is the best.

Worst new vehicle I’ve purchased

Would not buy again or recommend to anyone else. Unknown shudder/vibration at low speed (20-25 mph). Seats seem uncomfortable on trips for lower back support. Very disappointed with purchase. Toyota not customer oriented. Vehicle taken back for repairs. Rear brake drums were replaced at 160 miles for being out of round. This Dudu not fix shudder /vibration problem.

Great mid-size truck with rock solid reliability.

Overall I really light the truck, the power is good and I avg over 20mpg on highways and country roads. People complain about it upshifting too soon and then having to downshift. This can be overcome by taking it out of ECT. The default is for better fuel economy, so that's why it tends to want to be in a higher gear. It's the only truck in its class with a fold-flat rear seat which is important to me. It also has a tough composite bed that you can actually haul stuff in. It's a real truck with real off-road capability. That means it doesn't drive like a family sedan on the road. I have almost 30K on it and it's great on trails and in the snow. I haven't had any issues and with regular maintenance, I think this truck will last a long time and many miles.
