Can't miss

I bought this truck new is 99 and I currently have 199k on odo. All maintenance has been done by me and on time. The only thing that has been replaced is shocks, struts, timing belt, water pump, 3 sets of tires, 1 set of brakes - that is it. Overall, I get 19 - 19.5 in town and around 22 on the highway (v6 4wd 5spd). Towing capabilities is excellent. I just have to remember that it is a 99 when I have just driven my wifes camry. It does exactly what it is supposed to do - get you down the road without stranding you and it looks good doing ot. If you are thinking of buying one you will not be sorry.

A Workhorse with Style

Bought this 4x4 V6 TRD new and have had only a couple of moderate problems--replacing A/C switch and a head gasket. Now have 125K and though its carried loads and loads of firewood, appliances, and towed trailers, it still looks and runs great. Replaced the original Goodyears with Michelin LTXs to get a better ride and snow/ice traction. After 65K ago these tires are wearing like iron but still are still look like new. Giving me a quiet and great handling even in rough conditions. This tire change was like an upgrade in class. Definitely recommend. Only ding to call is the ride. Seems like it bottoms out pretty easily with a load. Handling is otherwise great, especially on snow and bad roads. My plan is to run it til the wheels fall off. Because of it's durability and reliability, I definitely recommend this vehicle, even used.

Best Truck I've Owned

Terrific value for the money with lower depreciation compared to others in class. Very reliable V-6 high performance with very low maintenance -- next to none, save for routine periodic oil and filter changes/tire rotation. Starter motor is only part replaced in 9-year period. For a medium-size truck that seats 5 and has a 122-in. bed, you can't do better!

My sixth Toyota

I accidentally bought my first Toyota in 1974 (my first car and I thought I wanted a VW) and I've owned Toyotas ever since. This Tacoma is my first truck and it is amazingly reliable. Except for regular maintenance, oil changes and tune-ups, it has cost me nothing. This is a 4cyl, 4x4, ext. cab, pretty loaded. Sadly it doesn't have power mirrors and the driver's side seat belt sticks when I pull it out to fasten it, and the seat belts are both uncomfortable on smaller people. I get about 27 MPG summer and 20 winter (depending somewhat on how much time I let it warm up in the morning.) As with my other Toyotas I've had some quirky electrical issues that often mysteriously correct themselves. Overall, though, with 140,000 miles on it this is a great truck. One thing, if you have a standard transmission, as mine is, and you start to have problems with the clutch, don't let anyone talk you into an $800.00 repair without first checking under the dash where the clutch pedal unit attaches. Instead of being welded in place that unit is fastened by a single screw to the firewall (above the pedals) If that screw comes loose or falls out the entire clutch unit becomes loose and the clutch won't engage and shows every symptom of needing repair. This can happen very slowly and pretty soon you may be needing to press the clutch bypass switch in order to start the vehicle. Look underneath, above the pedal, move the pedal and find where the unit attaches. Make sure that screw is in tight. I had two garages give me estimates on this before I took a look up under the dash. I replaced the screw and had a brand new clutch. Oh, What a Feeling!

A Fun Truck to Drive

My husband bought one brand new and we had it for almost 6 years. It was a good enough truck that we didn't feel the need to get rid of it quickly, but at the same time we were both surprised with the number of mechanical problems we had with it being that it was a Toyota. In 6 years we replaced a starter, a fuel pump, two water pumps, and hoses. It was driven reasonably. I actually drove it most of the time because my husband started work in outside sales and had to have something not just good on mpg's but great. It was a fun truck to drive and we got lots of compliments, but I think we just had some bad luck mechanically. I would still recommend it to someone looking for a sporty, small truck with power.

Always dependable Toyota Tacoma

An overall outstanding truck. It is very at home in the mountains. No struggles over mountain passes, almost impossible to get stuck in snow or mud. Excellent stock ground clearance for mountain jeep trails or rock crawling in Moab. Decent gas milage, considering it is a truck and a v6. Easy to use 4x4 and rear locking differential.
