How much would you be swayed by a new car that included $15,000 in free fuel? Now, how does your answer to that question change if, after you’ve used up that credit (or six years have passed, whichever comes first), your price per mile runs 30% to 50% higher than it would with another car? These are among the questions Toyota asks of shoppers interested in the Mirai fuel-cell electric vehicle. For 2024, the Mirai gets a new color, badging and the updated version of Toyota’s driver-assist and safety tech suite.

Fuel Sell

Toyota calls the Mirai a fuel-cell electric vehicle because while an electric motor drives the wheels, there’s no plug on the car; instead, an onboard fuel cell generates electricity using hydrogen. Refueling the Mirai is similar to refueling a vehicle with a normal internal-combustion engine except that hydrogen stations are nearly nonexistent in most of the U.S. That’s why Toyota has only sold the Mirai in California and Hawaii.

The Mirai’s electric motor drives the rear wheels with 182 horsepower and 221 pounds-feet of torque. Per Toyota’s estimates, the Mirai XLE can travel up to 402 miles on a full tank; with larger wheels and a heavier load of standard equipment, the Limited can manage 357 miles.

Availability and Pricing

The 2024 Toyota Mirai will go on sale soon. The XLE starts at $51,215 and the Limited at $68,180 (all prices include $1,025 destination fee).

Safety Features and Trim Levels

Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 safety suite is standard on every 2024 Mirai. It includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure steering assist, lane-centering steering, road-sign recognition and automatic high beams. Not officially covered by the suite’s umbrella but also included on every Mirai are blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert.

Also included on the XLE are LED headlights, keyless entry and starting, synthetic leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, 14-speaker JBL sound system and wireless phone charging.

Buyers of the Mirai Limited get heated and ventilated seats front and rear, three-zone climate control with touch-sensitive controls in the rear seat, ambient lighting, afixed panoramic moonroof and the ability to use a paired smartphone as the vehicle key. Additional safety features on the Limited include a 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automated parking and a head-up display.
