Expert 2025 Subaru Ascent review

our expert's take

our expert's take

What Is the 2025 Subaru Ascent?

The Subaru Ascent is a mid-size SUV with three rows of seats, standard all-wheel drive and a 260-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine coupled with a continuously variable automatic transmission. It seats seven or eight people, depending on whether the buyer chooses a second-row bench seat or captain’s chairs. The Ascent’s rivals include the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Grand Highlander and Kia Telluride.

What’s New on the 2025 Subaru Ascent?

The Ascent loses its base trim level for 2025, which raises its starting price by about $5,500. The lineup now starts with the Premium trim, which comes standard with heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. A Bronze Edition trim (essentially a bronze-trim appearance package for the Limited trim) and a top-line Onyx Edition Touring trim also join the line.

What Features in the 2025 Subaru Ascent Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 11.6-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated front seats
  • Second-row bench seat
  • Satellite radio
  • Four USB ports
  • Rear-seat reminder
  • Tri-zone climate control
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • LED headlights
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Available features include:

  • Blind spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rear automatic braking
  • Rear privacy glass
  • Power liftgate
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated front seats
  • Second-row captain’s chairs
  • Leather upholstery
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Navigation

Should I Buy the 2025 Subaru Ascent?

The good news for SUV shoppers is that competition is fierce among mid-size models with three rows of seats. Standard AWD certainly boosts the Ascent’s appeal, but its third row is snug and the turbo four-cylinder lacks verve when you need quick acceleration. In the plus column, the Ascent comes with many active-safety features, earns excellent scores in crash tests and features a standard 11.6-inch touchscreen.

  • Beautiful vehicle.

Beautiful vehicle. Plenty of power, excellent braking. Fit and finish is outstanding. More headroom that other SUV's we drove. Right size for us, plenty of room in a midsize+ vehicle. Love the 4-wheel drive. Highly recommend.

This is one of the best cars I have ever driven, and at 82, having driven for sixty four years, I have owned or leased one of almost everything. Subaru, in my opinion, is the best product there is. My dealership in Tucson is an award winning find, and now that this is my fourth Dubsru in thevv CB last six years, I can truly say I have found a great car.

We bought this because of the great experience that we have had with a 2020 Forester Touring and expect this car to be solid reliable as well. BUT - I am on my second example of this vehicle, in Onyx Touring trim, because the first one delivered to me had a serious internal engine defect that was causing a plume of oil smoke occasionally at startup. Subaru finally decided after a month that they would replace the original vehicle. This defect is not typical, as far as I can tell. Aside from that, the acceleration is quite good, even though the throttle is very touchy at take off. By the way, you CAN get 20 mpg or so out of it if you are careful, but expect only about 18.5 miles to the gallon on average if you have a heavy foot, because spooling up the turbo makes it suck fuel like a dragster. The car has a quality feel to it and is comfortable and quiet. The digital rearview mirror is a plus if you carry a lot of cargo because it displays the rear camera image instead of a convention mirror. The front seats are very supportive and have a lumbar support with both vertical and depth adjustment. The rear captain seats are excellent. The Ascent couples the Driver Monitoring System with the Lane Centering System, which will cause disabling of lane centering if the Driver Monitor System fails to recognize a driver. This is the only real irritation that I have with the driver assist functions. To be frank, I have seen more features on other vehicles in this price class, like, specifically, power folding third row seats and power steering column adjustments, which aren't even available on an Ascent, but overlooked that in favor of the expected durability. Since we already own the 2020 Forester, we have become accustomed to the Subaru quirks, like a poor user interface for the infotainment system, which we bypass by using Apple Car Play, and the persistent seatbelt alarms that are somewhat akin to riding around with an overprotective mother, but there are ways around that. Be aware that the oil change interval for the 2.5 litre turbo engine is only 6000 miles and Subaru recommends synthetic motor oil as well, so maintenance costs will probably be higher than other vehicles.
