CVT transmission has issues

CVT transmission went out at a stoplight. Dealer doesn't know what caused the problem and since they can't reproduce the issue, they basically told us to cross our fingers and pray to the Subaru gods that it doesn't happen again, like when we are on vacation or in the middle of a snowstorm in January. The issue happened at a stoplight. Dashboard lit up and my wife had to gun the engine just to get the car to creep along to get it into a parking lot. Clearly an issue with the CVT (likely a slipping chain) that Subaru refuses to recognize. We have been talking to Subaru corporate and their position is that if the dealer cannot reproduce the problem, there is nothing they can do. I asked what if this happens 10 more times, then what? The answer was if the dealer can't reproduce it, there is nothing they can do. The dealer checked the CVT fluid level and the connections on the transmission and that's it. Didn't even replace the CVT fluid. Dealer now says they were following instructions from the regional engineer. They gave us a print out of the trouble codes and it goes on for 4 pages, including startability malfunction, pre-ignition detected, transmission control system (MIL request), incorrect gear ratio, ECM, AT, and multiple codes for the Eyesight system and combination meter (along with XM/satellite digital audio radio service antenna faults).

All the benefits of a Subaru in 3 rows

Perfect fit for a family that wants a Subaru but needs extra space. It is a great combination of daily driver and family hauler. Plenty of space for extra gear with Subaru's reliability and AWD.

You get so much bang for your buck!

Love all the space, the power, and safety of this car! Subaru is so reliable and well built. Drives very quietly yet has a lot of power. Great performance! My favorite features are the built in sun shades and the blindspot detectors!

Comfortable ride!

Very happy with all the amenities provided by the Ascent. As high tech as is available with wifi hot spot, Apple Car Play and Android Auto. To many more items to list them all. Visit their website or a dealer for a full listing of all features. Eyesight: Frankly I did not want a car with all the safety bells and whistles but find that I like the gentle nudge of the steering wheel provided when I wander near the center or side lines. It does not jerk you but nudges you and you automatically respond. This can be turned off easily. The lane keeping is a separate safety feature that beeps and flashes a warning on the heads up display if you veer to close to the lane markers. It can be turned off with a button. This feature is always on by default each time you start the car. he adaptive cruise control is very nice. Easy to adjust how close yo wish to follow another vehicle in front. The system slows you down if the vehicle in front slows down. And if or when the vehicle in front speeds back up the car will resume your chosen speed. My model is the Limited and has many features that we wanted. The touring has one color choice for the interior which is Java Brown. The exterior color does somewhat dictate interior colors. The red and black allow the choice of black or ivory whereas the rest are limited to what Subaru thinks you should have. The only thing that I do not like is that the third row folded down does not snuggle up to the back of the second row. A place for items to fall down into. I do find a small hesitation each time I start up from a stop. Not awful but I notice it each time. We own an Outback which has been a great car. This greatly influenced my decision to go with the big brother Ascent.

Great Product from Subaru

Bought a new Ascent Limited. Really nice vehicle, nice power, all wheel drive, interior is very nice. My only complaint is you can?t get ventilated seats except in the Touring trim in which the seats are only in Java brown. If you want black leather with every option you can?t get ventilation in the seats (we need this in AZ!). Kinda disappointing for a $44,000 vehicle.

Best Bang for Your Buck

We currently own a Honda Odyssey with over 120k mi. & 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. I am looking to replace my Odyssey with an AWD SUV. My husband & I have test driven the Audi Q7, VW Atlas, Acura MDX, Honda Pilot, Subaru Ascent, Lexus RX (RXL was not out at the time), Chevy Tahoe, Infiniti QX60 & 80, Mazda CX9, Chrysler Pacifica, & Buick Enclave. My husband bought the Highlander Hybrid before Ascent came out & does like it. Now that he's test-driven the Ascent, he likes the Ascent more. Last winter, in snow, the Highlander did not do well as we expected for an AWD which was very disappointing. Our front wheel drive Odyssey actually does better in snow. We did own a Forester & STI & love Subaru's AWD system. Highlander's sound system is lackluster. We even wondered if sound was coming out of 2nd row speakers. The Highlander's ride is smoother & less road noise than Ascent but handling doesn't come close to the Ascent. Audi Q7 was very nice but expensive. It doesn't have a lot of storage space & no touch screen infotainment system. Acura MDX Hybrid drove well but dull interrior, tight 3rd row, no 2nd row window sun shades available which was odd for how expensive it is, an amazing sound system though but doesn't make up for the dull, cramped interior & high pricing. Lexus RX hybrid drove smooth but didn't feel sporty around corners. Beautiful interior but felt very cramped, especially up front. We heard 3rd row in RXL is almost useless. Wonder how well it does in snow??? Mazda CX9, owned one & rented newer version on vacation, drives well. Safety crash tests are questionable. Our previous CX9 did poor on offset frontal impact crash test. Honda Pilot was spacious but not too thrilled about exterior look. It & Tahoe had infotainment issues/glitches. They may be fixed by now. Tahoe is not as reliable, smooth ride but feels big when driving, & tight cargo behind 3rd row. The seats are very comfortable though but overpriced. Also, it's a gas guzzler as is the QX80. VW Atlas looked too much like a Ford, very spacious, drove fine, but even though you can open hatch door with button up front you can not close it. You have to take out your key fob to close hatch or push button on hatch door, which we thought was very odd. Sales person couldn't explain why. Also, we question reliability. Infiniti QX60 drove well but also wary of it's reliabilty. Buick Enclave does not offer a 2nd row bench. We need a bench in 2nd row for our 3 kids on long road trips & 3rd row seats down for cargo space for luggage, etc. The Ascent has almost all the best features of all these vehicles at a descent price. Yes, the ride could be smoother & less road noise but the difference is barely noticeable. I know it will do well on any terrain & in any weather. It stuck to the curves like an Audi or even the CX9. The infotainment system & controls are easier to reach, plenty of cup holders & USB ports. Highlander doesn't have enough of both, especially cup holders. We were concerned about enough power with Ascent only being a 4 cylinder but the turbo kicks in & our worries were alleviated. All the safety features that come standard are amazing, very spacious & roomy 3rd row, larger cargo space than I think of all the crossovers. We were actually impressed with how nice the interior is for the price. We will be getting the Ascent Limited with bench seat next year to replace our Odyssey. I do love our minivan but want an AWD SUV now that our kids are older & our oldest will be driving soon. I don't trust the AWD system on the Toyota Sienna since disappointed with the Highlander's AWD in snow. We are done looking & test driving any more vehicles now that we've test driven the Ascent. My husband is more excited about driving the Ascent when we get it than his Highlander.

Great new model for 2019!

Went in to buy a new Outback and did not even know about the Ascent. Took it for a test drive and found the handling, technology, and acceleration to be a more than pleasant surprise.
