Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The G-Class received a ground-up redesign for the 2019 model year, but the average observer would be hard pressed to tell the difference from the previous-generation version at a glance. Similar to the Jeep Wrangler’s 2018 redesign, the new G-Class retained its iconic exterior styling with only subtle updates, though it was modernized underneath. It was notably larger, too, growing 2.1 inches longer and 4.8 inches wider, in turn increasing interior space with 1.5 more inches of front legroom and nearly 6 more inches of rear legroom. The cabin was completely redone with a fresh design inspired by Mercedes’ flagship S-Class sedan, featuring dual 12.3-inch displays and premium materials like open-pore wood and Nappa leather. Rugged body-on-frame architecture was retained, though the chassis now featured an independent front suspension for better on-road handling while maintaining impressive off-road capability. Higher-performance AMG trims continued into the new generation, with ludicrously powerful engines on offer. All G-Class trims received regular yearly updates, including a mild styling refresh — and the G-Class’ first all-electric version — for the 2025 model year.

For the 2002 model year, Mercedes-Benz officially began selling the G-Class in the U.S. in limited numbers. In previous years, G-Classes were brought to America and converted to U.S. specs by gray market private importers. The boxy, retro shape of the G-Class helped make it popular with celebrities and other moneyed buyers, and Mercedes made only small updates over the years. The 2002 G500 was powered by a normally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 that made 292 horsepower. The power output of subsequent G-Class variants, including the G500, went upward from there: For 2003, a higher-performance AMG G55 trim with a 349-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 debuted; for 2005, the AMG G55 was upgraded to a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 that made 469 hp; and an even more powerful AMG G63 trim with a 544-hp, twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 debuted for 2013.
